Don't Fret About the "Fastest Growing Religion"

Once upon a time, there was a vast empire that was born of out events around 1914. It demanded that its youth become "Pioneers".

It grew rapidly and published endless statistics of growth. It attracted an ever-growing number of desperate people in the 3rd World.

However, what no one seemed to notice, amidst all the evidence of its growing might, was that its empire was a money losing proposition

and that it made endless numbers of enemies thru its aggression. It suddenly was confronted with the dilemma of what to do with legions

of poor, unproductive people that it had attracted --- and it fell apart.

That was the Soviet Union's fate. I suspect the Watchtower will be similar. All the while we read about endless claims of growth of the

"truth", hardly anyone seems to notice fewer Bethelites, fewer hard bound books, fewer magazines, buildings sold off, subscriptions

dropped and a litany of other cutbacks that are just as endless. They are piling up an ever growing number of unproductive, passive

and disadvantaged people - that they have neither the funds nor the inclination to take care of - other than offering them fraudulent

prophesies to support false hope. One wonders if the slower growing churches were impeded by trying to project a sense of charity

that the Watchtower is too heartless ( or is 'souless') to care about.

I say this: the Watchtower is going to be confronted by the same paradox that killed off the Soviet Union - "what the heck do we do

with all these poor dependent people now that we have them? Gather more poor? Why are the wealthier Witnesses closing their wallets?

What can we cut next without any [ mostly brain-dead] Witnesses noticing?"

Empires die because the costs of maintenance accelerate. I'd bet they're starting to sense that.... You might be surprized at what

happens next - because Jehovah God isn't opening his wallet either!

By design the message appeals to those without hope. The message proclaims that within the next few years all your problems will be solved magically by the GT and Armageddon.

The people come and then they wait and wait. In the mean time the problems are not really solved and these people become a burden.

But the society is not about caring for the needy. So thus is the problem you describe.

I already see the handwriting on the wall for one change at least...

As of Jan. 1 of this year, any person can download an MP3 of the latest magazines, including the "JW-only" Watchtower from the website www.jw.org.

On that site, there is an "elders-only" login section, where the elders can request literature shipments, change standing magazine orders, enter field service reports, etc.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, in the elders-only section, I predict they will post the content of the "JW-only" WTs and the Kingdom Ministries. Local BOEs will then be resposible for printing off a single PDF copy, then using congregation funds to go to Kinko's to print up exactly however many are needed for the local congregation. They'll try it first in the US, then move on to Canada & Europe.

Presto! The cost of printing & shipping millions of WTs and KMs instantly disappears, passed on to the local congregations.

Praise Jah for his fast-moving celestial chariot!

I wouldn't be surprised that they outsource to a country where the health care is paid for by the government. Gerontological Bethelites are a big drag on the WatchTower warchest. Canada is not too far away from Wallkill/Patterson.

I have wondered if there is any 'bottom' to this organization and its cheap-a$$ zeal. Could they actually tell publishers to download tracts

and place them door to door? Instead of books and magazines?

Shameless crosspost from another thread. I cracked myself up with this one. :-)

From the Gospel of Rutherford the Judge.
And as they sat upon the mounts of the Catskills and looketh there upon the Bindery, and the disciples came unto them privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the WatchTower? And Gerrit Lösch answered and said unto them, Take heed that no Apostate deceive you. For many Apostates shall open web forums and download and share WatchtTower PDFs, saying, I am a Witness; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of paperback Bibles and rumours of smaller calendars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For higher education shall rise against the pioneer spirit, and Apostate against cult: and there shall be lawsuits, and pedophile scandals, and downsizing, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

    Great topic Met.

The towers have always played with the #s. If they cant settle on who's coming back from Sodom, should I trust there reporting of publishers. They have always pumped up numbers.

Look how the "annointed" numbers have spiked and fell off, until some damage control was brought in. Like changeing what a "generation" really meant.

I think its more of a publicity move than anything else.

    Same ole BS.

I think many people remember what happened to Enron. Back in 1999, they were the fastest growing energy company, and stockholders were looking forward to huge returns. But it was all based on lies. By 2002, the company had been exposed, and went belly up. Those who held shares of the company took a bath.

Hopefully, the same thing will happen to the Watchtower Society. I would like nothing more than to see the numbers go down from just under 7 million at peak for 2007 to well short of 2 million for 2008, with zero left in 2009.
