I wanted to be a porn star, but they were strongly opposed to this, for some strange reason. I tried to show them I had a gift for it by giving them an audition tape.

Being raised in "The Truth", what I gave up, like so many others, was higher education and with it almost any hope of having a meaningful career. I have always loved computers and technology. Had I gone to college, I would have graduated in 1996, most likely wth a degree in computer science, something that would have been quite lucrative in the mid 90's. Honestly, missing out on college is my greatest regret in life.

Honestly, missing out on college is my greatest regret in life.
It's not too late. I started last year and I am graduating with a BA in 2 months...
I guess I didn't go to college when I was younger, like everyone else. I went to Bethel and then went to serve where the need was worse.
But I learned Spanish fluently as a result of living in Latin America, and got a wider view of the world as a result. Wasn't all that bad. I have good memories of the places I visisted.
Of course, now I don't have any money, don't own my own home, didn't have any kids, etc....

I was a deputy Sheriff they bombarded and harrassed me until I quit. I would have been retired playing music today if not for the dubs.

NINJA- Modeling for cabbage patch kids ? LOL! Funny ! At least you weren't like Keyser- having to give up being a porn star ! LOL!
UNDERCOVER- I'm glad you got to develop in the design/drafting field- and stay in it ! Sometimes people have to move around to different types of jobs. I'm glad you pursued your course and didn't listen to the elders.
AK-JEFF- Elders really were jerks to you in talking you out of your pilots career ! I know how you feel - I had to say " no " to so many opportunities as well - so as not to miss the meetings. I too have felt resentment over the years towards the organization. Funny, the elders didn't hassle me as much as my ex witness wife ! She was a fanatic.
RAPUNZEL- You certainly were " lucky " to have been able to complete your university schooling ! Good for you ! I'm happy for you. Peace out back to ya !
Y KNOT- Politics, Hollywood, I hear ya ! At least you are running for the school board ! That's good ! And it's cool you do community theatre as well !
R. CRUSOE- A toy store sold replica guns and you got hassled for that ? Couldn't sell cars because of a cigarette kiosk ? Wow.
LLBH- I hear you. I have to use my wit to survive as well. Research chemist and teacher - I'm sorry you had to give that up . Hang in there.
CASPER- You were talked out of a nursing degree ? I'm so sorry. I bet you would have been a great nurse! You are a caring person .
DANIEL P- Garbage Pail Kids ? LOL!
MEGAFLOWER- You gave up a med school degree too ? I'm sorry.
KEYSER SOZE- A porn star career ? LOL! Funny ! I bet you would have given Ron Jeremy a run for his money ! LOL!
GALILEO- Higher education you gave up ? Sorry to hear that . You probably would have done great in computers and technology. I hope somehow you were able to do something with computers still.
AWAKENED at GILEAD- It's true what you say. I know several on JWD who have gone back and got their degrees when older in their late 30's , or 40's and 50's. I'm happy for you that you are getting your bachelors degree in 2 months ! Great !
STILLA JW EXELDER- I'm glad you didn't sacrifice your career.
JAGUAR BASS- I know you work in a prison now my friend. I know it's tough. You were a deputy sheriff and the witnesses harassed you to quit ? Bastards. But I bet you still play great music though ! Send me some some time !
TIRED of the HYPOCRISY- Wow! You had a lot of coals in the fire you could have pursued ! Sounded like you tried everything ! I hope you are doing O.K. now ! Peace out, Mr. Flipper -

Hey Flipper and Everybody Else,
When I was a 10 year old kid, I started keeping a life-list of the birds I had identified and studied. I read everything I could about birds and dreamed of going to Cornell to study orinthology (Cornell has the greastest ornithology program in the world), but of course, college was frowned on when I graduated from high school in 1974 -- how ironic, huh? So, I did the next best thing.....
I started a business when I was 19 and it did very well, but it only did well because I put in a lot of hours trying to build it up. Eventually, I caught a ration of shit for not putting "kingdom interests first." I succumbed to the constant prodding and the business growth lost the momentum it had. I continued to provide a living, but I know that if I had been free to pursue it the way I wanted, I would have retired when I was 40.
Even while I had my business, I wanted to go back to school for an engineering or architecture degree, but that also incurred a ration of shit my wife and her parents and the elders....so more dreams squashed.
After I finally wised up and left the Borg in 1997, I went back to school in 1999. I finished a B.S. degree in geology in 2004 and in a few months I am going to finish a masters degree in geology and a law degree. So for all of you guys who think it's too late to go back it is not. Just pull yourself together and do it. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and the future has tremendous opportunity ahead for me.
I also want to say that, even though we don't know each other personally, I really appreciate all of the posters here. It is my goal to meet some of you guys in person somewhere along the way.
Cheers to all,
Alex

Thanks for the encouragement. I have been strongly considering going back to school for quite a while. I think I will. My problem at the current time, honestly, is that my life is comfortable. Not great, but not bad. It's just not very fulfilling. Reading the stories of others here that went back to school after getting out of the WTS has been an inspiration. Thanks again.
