The parents accused of beating their 12-year-old daughter to death have told police they were meting out the biblical punishment of "40 lashes minus one, three times," detectives said Monday.

Constance Slack, a registered nurse at a children's hospital, gagged her daughter, Laree, while she was strapped down to a futon, police said. Her father, Larry Slack, then repeatedly hit the child with an inch-thick section of rubberized electrical cable filled with strands of wire, police said. She died of internal bleeding.

I have the rest of the story on the Watchtower Observer:

They used electrical wire, beat her on chest and bottom with it after having the other children pull down her pants, stuffed rags in her mouth. Assistant prosecutor said it's the worst case he ever saw in Cook County, Illinois. Parents isolated the kids from peers in the neighborhood. Beat her some 160 times. Strong belief Bible says to use corporal punishment. Murder case.

    Kent:

Thank you very very much for posting this article. This is one of your best human interest stories. You have alot of journalistic and investigative talent.

This story is so powerful, I just hope it receives as much attention as possible, despite the war situation.

This is the type of story that sends one on an emotional roller coaster ride from sadness to rage to confusion and everything in between. I am so angry right now I want to personally execute both parents, and I am also angry that I didn't do anything to save that poor little girl.

I am going to be a mess the rest of the day and useless at work. When does it end? When does the madness cease? I hope for that girl's sake she will be remembered by Almighty God, if he exists.

Thx again for another beneficial, but sad and truthful story.

    Hi Kent,

You know I'm no apologist for the WTS, but I was wondering if the word "Biblical" in the subject line here should be in quotes. The reason? I'm not sure the bible reccommends 117 strokes as punishment. If it does, I'd like to see a reference to this "3(40 - 1)" punishment scheme. I would also like to emphasize that the homicidal parents didn't use a simple electrical "wire," but a length of very heavy electrical cable (reportedly one inch (25 mm) thick) the cable itself probably weighed several pounds - much heavier than an electrical appliance cord or even a whip. The impact of such a heavy mass on this poor girl's body 117 times caused internal damage - it pulverized her.

While a "Biblical" punishment for the parents might be something our outrage demands, we can trust that the secular court will be more humane than these idiot paents ever thought to be.

Jeez, these aholes lived just a short drive away. I wish that the parents could be beaten to death. I hope that they receive the death penalty for what they did to their daughter and their other kids.

Don't worry, they will get thier's by their new roommates. Folks in prison do not take kindly to demented individuals such as these.

It is absolutely unbelievable! While apologetics for the WTBS may claim that these individuals were already unstable or off balance, the simple fact is that for the last 80 years the WTBS has been admonishing, recommending, advising, counseling, educating, condoning, and educating its followers that the word "rod" in the bible is a physical thing.

For years, fundamentalists from many faiths continue the madness of using the word "rod" as a basis for coporal punishment, which usually ends in child abuse and family breakdown during the teen years.

Rods in the bible are used as measuring guides, tools for examination, like a ruler or magnifying glass, depending on the subject of study. Where discipline is concerned, the rod is for MEASURING the results and friutage of the EDUCATION previously inculcated by the child's parents.

If the parents did not input any education and training (discipline) then the rod would reveal negative results. It has always been a tool for double-checking the parent's efforts, and not meant to be a tool for blaming and punishing the child.

It's the bible way of telling parents "garbage in, garbage out". And the rod of discipline if the collection of tools used to measure those results.

It is amazing how many miss this simple point and are quickly caught up in authority struggles with simple children. Even a small child can understand this logic. Yet, all of these so-called spiritual men cannot see past their "spiritual badge of enforcement" issued by the WTBS under the guise of rods and discipline. It is pathetic.

I just sent the reporter of that story an e-mail with my comments and referenced her to the http://www.ajwrb.org/ web site.

This is why when we have the occasional (albeit well meaning) "what were the goodie goodie, happy joy joy things about growing up in the "TRUTH"? threads, my stomach turns. For too many of us, THIS ARTICLE EMBODIES WHAT GROWING UP A JEHOVAH'S WITNESS MEANT.
I am so sickened right now. At first, I thought maybe this is just sensationalism. I had to go check the original link first (no offense, Kent, it just seemed SO outrageous). It's true. The Chicago Sun Times. One could try to console themselves by saying this is an isolated case, but so many of us raised "in" will remind you that this is pretty much the norm. So many of us, including myself, could've been that girl, if the biblical "punishments" had just turned a few degrees. I canonly remember vageries (i.e., before meeting times or ESPECIALLY assembly times, were the WORST--I dreaded them. spilled koolaid (very bad), belts, welts on back and legs. Broken collar bone as a very young child, being "taught" to swim--I refuse to go near water to this day). I have put so many memories behind me and have forgiven my mother. She has mellowed out so much in her old age, especially as she's drifted from the "ORG". She has even apologized. One day, if I should outlive her, I will write a book, methinks. When it does not hurt so much to remember.
I am grieving the loss of this girl. I have copied this article, and will show it to the same school officials I showed the bogus BOE letters regarding "non-reporting" of child molestation and child abuse.
Thank you for your diligent work, Kent.
    Love,
    Bridgette
