I don't think there is a single case of anyone praying before they eat in the Bible. Even in the Lord's Supper, the prayers were said during the meal, not before it.

This reminds me of a Bethel joke, when we were served some dish like soup or mince, which we suspected to be made of leftovers from previous meals: "No need to pray, this has already been blessed several times."

I think its more of a Christian chant to say we are good, we are the people who want to be in your favor so you take us to heaven and not hell or perhaps whack us at Armageddon.
