it may be something as simple as her puter breaking down or losing an internet connection, failing that there could be other everyday reasons for not getting back to you, poorly, hospitalised etc.
over the years i've had hard drives die on me mid email conversation and its been ages before i could get back online.
So she asks for an invitation, gets one, and doesn't show up. After that she ignores your attempts to communicate.
I think it's safe to say this person is not a friend. Let it go. If she wants to talk she knows how to find you, and then it's your turn to decide whether or not to respond.

It sounds as though someone has mentioned to refrain associating with you. Especially if she is as liberal as you say. Sounds fishy.
If you do not want to wreck the fade let it go.

I have been in a situation where I thought a friend was mad at me, for weeks and weeks. I came to find out that she thought I was mad at her, but had some financial difficulties and didn't have email. She also didn't have my new number as I had just moved from Florida to Illinois.
She ended up finding my mom at her job and getting my number. I was so happy I cried when I talked to her! And she was DF'd YAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stay positive until you hear it from her.
