Why I think JW's NEED to BAN all Assemblies now!

This post is not going to make you feel good. I'm rather sick myself for even telling you about this.

I’m also not trying to be alarmist and add to the ubiquitous stress and terror that we already see in the USA but there is something that is bothering me really bad and I wanted to put it out there to get some honest feedback on.

The recent biological warfare attacks in the USA have of course altered everyone about the real potential danger of terrorism and how we collectively are vulnerable. When you take the time to really study biological warfare though, you can see that the current Anthrax attacks are far more bark than bite and only a small number of people have actually died from these attacks. There is however something much worse that could happen with releasing a biological pathogen that is like Smallpox or several other deadly viruses. If terrorists could effectively distribute such a virus, it would potentially cause millions of deaths in this country (and other countries when it spread) before a vaccine could be produced to incoulate all of us.

So, far none of this is new to anyone in the medical community that is cognizant of the dangers we are facing but what I think is potentially important is something that involves Jehovah’s Witnesses.

To effectively disperse a viral contagion the terrorist would ideal want a setting in which thousands of people would be constantly exposed for several hours at a time. Even better for reasons of spreading this disease, would be for these thousands of people to be very socially active and in turn spreading the disease as rapidly as possible to other people.

The expected method of attack is thought to be aboard an airliner as planes normally recycle the same air during the flight. These people would then arrive at their destination and would presumably meet other people, spreading the disease. Regardless, I don’t think this will be the method used simply because it would be fairly easy for the health department to track down each person on that plane and find all the people they had contact with, thus limiting the spread of the viral pathogen. On top of this, too much security now at airports. Many people could still die if they did this, but it would hopefully be controllable.

What would be much more horrific though, is if the same conditions (recycled air, continuous exposure of thousands of people) were met on a larger scale. You might be thinking that such an event might be like an outdoor event like a baseball or football game, and you would be getting warm…however the worst possible scenario I can think of is this…

…they would target an assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Simply by quickly squirting a concentrated liquid viral solution on the outside air conditioning or heating vents of an assembly hall, the microbes would be sucked inside and fill the air and contaminate every person inside. They would all be breathing that air for hours at a time. The viral particles that landed on their hands, would soon find their way inside these doomed Witnesses when they touched their faces with their hands, etc. Even worse, depending upon the incubation period for the virus, these tens of thousands of Witnesses would be meeting not only other Witnesses but family, coworkers, going door-to-door…it would be a terrorists dream come true.

If such an outbreak took place, there would be no master list that the authorities could use to track down all these people. They might make an appeal to the Society to have each person at such a convention immediately go to a hospital but Witnesses are so paranoid they would think this is the beginning of the Great Tribulation and refuse to cooperate. It would not only be a nightmare, but could lead to unthinkable numbers of people dying.

Finally, you might take comfort in the fact that our government thinks nobody is going to sell the Taliban or other terrorists either Smallpox or some other virus that can be used for a weapon. Maybe this is true, but there is something I know for sure they are not telling you:it is easy to obtain both Smallpox and other dangerous pathogens from exhuming dead victims of these diseases. You see, many viruses can remain dormant for decades, even centuries. They survive both heat and freezing, just waiting to come alive again in another human or animal host. The only real deterrent to a terrorist is knowledge of how to culture the viruses. I’m horrified to think that anyone knowing microbiology would do something like this but look what we have with the Anthrax!

To sum things up…do you think Witnesses NEED TO BE BANNED NOW FROM ATTENDING ASSEMBLIES? This is not a case of freedom of religion but of saving lives. I hope I am very mistaken and there is no chance of this happening. Your thoughts please…

HEY Skipper,I`ve thought about this myself.Assemblies or Kingdom Halls, what better way to infect communities, than to send infected people who diligently go from door to door?Scary isn`t it?...OUTLAW

I'm watching a MSN Explorer special on Smallpox now. Amazing what I don't know - and thankfully never experienced. I understand the dread of smallpox better now.

Smallpox can live in dead people - correct. Smallpox is now in 2 laboratories in the US and Russia (but they think others have stashes hidden).

As for Assemblies - correct statement. But good targets would be any major indoor event where people are going to be for several hours. True, more interaction occurs between people (at lunch).

But a basketball game, concert, etc., would seem to be as good target?

I'm thinking that I am not going to play into the hands of terrorists, by thinking of all the possible interpretations in their activity, tying my life to one of fear of consequences, which in turn, brings about depression and recession. Nor do I think it too wise to spread ideas around, that would be terrorists might think, and/or act upon, 'Wow!! thats cool, we hadn't thought of that, cheers matey'! Do you get my drift?

It's nice to see paranoia alive and well. Give me a break.

Witnesses are hardly a target, especially due to their non-political and so-called neutral stand. Terrorism is generally about making a political statement and targetting Witnesses would make a very weak statement.

There are much higher odds of some wacko disillusioned Witness or ex Witness firing a gun into the crowd or planting a bomb (which I guess is terrorism, isn't it)

You might enjoy reading Gina Kolata's _Flu - The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic and the Search for the Virus That Caused It_

A good part of the book deals in simple laymen's terms with some of the many problems involved with extracting viable viral pathogens from cadavers and preserved human tissue samples.

: …they would target an assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

This would be all fine and dandy if people actually gave a shit about Jehovah's Witnesses, but people don't give a damn shit about Jehovah's Witnesses, despite their shameless self-promotion.

The only people who actually give a shit about Jehovah's Witnesses (except Jehovah's Witnesses and their religious masters) are EX-Jehovah's Witnesses.

Ex-dubs who care mostly want to HELP dubs, not kill them. Their religion kills them. People like me want to stop that.

Celtic, I'm very familar with that arguement (keep ideas out of the hands of terrorists) and even some people blame Hollywood or writer's for giving them ideas but I disagree completely. There is a well developed school of thought that says "don't stick your head in the sand and hope for the best but do something to keep it from happening." The genie is already out of the bottle in terms of technological terrorism and those who really want to do harm are going to find ways of doing it. Where I think it better to keep vulnerabilities quiet is to prevent unbalanced and emotionally disturbed people from acting on impulse to do something. Terrorists do their thing in a planned and determined way, often with great professionalism.

Pathofthorns...you are thinking like an American here. Your worldview is perfectly logical to another American. You are correct in stating that terrorists have the goal of making a political statement and often this is correct but the paradigm has been changing and it is now about hatred. Some weeks ago when the war was just starting, enraged moslems started murdering Christians? What didn't catch that? American media didn't have much to say about that. We are seeing huge amounts of anger build up and people willing to strike out with that anger, even at the cost of their own life. The old rules don't apply all the time. Am I paranoid? Perhaps a bit but that is why I wanted to get some input, and thanks for yours.

Thanks for the reference TD, I will try to get that and check it out.

Farkel, you got a good point there and it is in everyone's self interest not to kill anyone.

    I'm an extremist.

I don't think assemblies should be banned. I don't think our lives should change. I disagree with virtually every new law our government has passed since 9/11 (besides the fact that they won't help fight terrorism, but that's just political idiocy at work). But that's because I'm an extremist. I don't believe in changing my life at the threat of terrorism. I'd rather live my life my way, or die.

"Give me liberty, or give me death." I truly mean it. Not too many others do, however. So while many other U.S. citizens are beseeching the government to take their rights away from them in the name of a false security, I'm still siding with liberty and openness. Terrorism will never die, so might as well live your life in the meantime.

    Dear brother Mindchild,

As a kitchen hand at assemblies near and far, large and small, I was personally involved in the systematic release of bacterial theocratic warfare agents into hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, rice puddings, sandwiches and packs of luke warm spagettii over a long period of time.

These were far more effective than we thought and often the 48 hour bugs kicked in a day too early meaning a large drop in attendance on the second and thirday of conventions.

I believe any plan by terrorists to target the stomachs, earlobes or any other part of a Jehovah's Witness anatomy derisable .. Our brothers and sisters are the toughest people on earth when it comes to tribulations of that kind! Sure the days of assembly prepared food were critical times hard to deal with but at least the brothers who called sick for work on Monday were often well enough to go out on field service that afternoon.
