I have had McAfee Virus protection on this crappy computer of mine for the last year, which has now expired. Some people have told me to use the free software available online as virus protection - I am a bit sceptical... Does anyone do this? Is it safe?

    Any comments appreciated!!!

I don't use virus 'protection' as I think most of it is a con (doesn't really protect you) and it has a huge impact on your machine performance (disk IO).

    See: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000803.html

Basic steps like not opening attachments and running dodgy software, peer-to-peer file sharing and such like is better protection IMO.

Personally I've seen and have used free Anti-virus software and I've always returned back to Norton anti-virus

it just seems to be written with a little more strength and power to it.

If you go to your local computer store and ask for a OEM version of Norton Anti-virus 2008 its only 20 bucks and gives a valid year of updates

20 bucks for a year of solid security seems to be worth it.

I found that it doesn't drag down your system if your computer is recent, unlike it used to years ago.

I actually use NAV 2008 and Spy-ware doctor at the same time with no problems, and I feel well protected.

    Just my 2 cents.

I should also add that I'm a big down loader of free movies and music off torrent sites so its a good idea

to be running a good anti-virus program.

I use Avast right now as it's the only one I found that runs on 64-bit Vista. I would recommend AVG though it takes far less memory to run. I found Norton to be overpriced crap that didn't even catch things the freeware did and ate a lot more memory.
