AVG free version is good as it scans your emails too. The free one doesn't detect spyware/adware though so run it with Spybot S&D or AdAware.

Make sure you download the FREE version, NOT the 30 day free trial.

Also, if you have Norton installed, make sure you completely remove it before downloading AVG otherwise it causes chaos with your computer!!

I don't know how true it is but they say that the purchasable AVG is targetted more at businesses, so they're happy to offer it as a free download to home users - the only downside being that you don't get the tech support (although they do have a users forum which I used to find answered questions much quicker lol!)

Don't be skeptical of the free versions, Princess Daisy, a couple of them are marvelous. And yes, they DO protect your Microsoft Operating system.

As has already been mentioned, AVG is a very good one, I used that for a couple of years, until I read reviews on Avast, which got better reviews and works marvelously.

    What Simon and IP_SEC said.

I've never lost a bet with a "cocktailer."

(Cocktailer = A User that believes a "cocktail" of antivirus and antispyware apps will keep them safe.)

They always have malware on their machines they didn't know about.

www.avast.com - I like this one. I've had Norton and McAfee and Pc-cillin and several others. Avast is the least annoying, and seems to work really well. The home version is free, and I haven't had any problems with it. Personally I think almost anything would be better than Norton or McAfee.

You can get McAfee for free through AOL (don't have to be a member). Whatever else you think about them, no one has more to gain from keeping the internet virus free than AOL.

The new AVG 8 only gives you 30 days of free E-Mail protection. See if version 7.5 is still available for download.

I should also add that I'm a big down loader of free movies and music off torrent sites so its a good idea

to be running a good anti-virus program.

    "Code" for porn.

I use Mailwasher to preview my email and delete the spam etc. at my ISP before downloading it to my mail program.

    As far as great protection:

THE BEST are Kaspersky, NOD32 and AVIRA (non free)

AVG = okay. But not great. I use to recommend this until I heard they are disabling certain features and including propaganda ware. Thus I recommend AVIRA.
AVAST=I use to recommend this untl AVG came out on top as far as protection.
AVIRA=Out of all the FREE ones. THIS IS THE BEST.

90% of my customers come in because of VIRUS/SPYWARE infections. They either have NORTON or McAfee installed.

Simon is incorrect. ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS DO PROTECT YOU. HE IS CORRECT IN SAYING THEY SLOW DOWN YOUR MACHINE, it's the price you pay to remain virus free, don't want your ID Stolen right? The majority of viruses come from porn sites and from limewire (per customers). You can still get infected without surfing (assuming you have no firewall, antivirus, etc.) It's estimated that your PC will get 'attacked' in 22 minutes as certain ports on your PC are open, and thus an infection will occur.

Best for me you don't protect yourself or use McAfee, Norton, Avast, AVG ... good business for me :)
