The Tunguska Event

There's a person on the internet (a JW or ex-JW) that has speculated on this event. I don't remember what website it was on. The speculation was that this event marked the arrival of Satan and his minions, being cast out of heaven by Michael the Archangel. This would mean that Satan had time to plan WWI for 1914.

    Pure speculation, of course.

I did read more about this event, and it seems that scientists are finally going to investigate the remains of the meteor either this year or in 2009. It might be interesting to see if they find anything. The remains are supposed to be at the bottom of some lake nearby.

There have already been several expeditions to Tunguska, the first being years ago, but post WW1 IIRC.

At first, scientists were puzzled because no crater was found. This is currently explained by the idea that either a comet or meteor was heated to such a degree by re-entry that it exploded and vaporized above the ground.

This would explain the unusual pattern of felled trees - crispy fried, but still standing up at the epicenter, and then felled radially away from the center in a circular pattern all around it.

The Witness idea (Satan being felled to Earth) is certainly fanciful - but maybe not too much more than the idea that an alien spacecraft made it here all the way from the distant stars and had a meltdown just before landing. Doesn't explain why in the world they came all this way to visit Tunguska, though...or why they weren't better starship engineers in the first place.

Or the one where the Russians tried to claim that they had invented the A-bomb first; doesn't explain why they didn't use it on Hitler when they really needed it, either.

Science channel, or Discovery have several programs on this event.
