Betweenworlds, I have always loved collies, but here in florida dogs with a lot of hair are a real problem. Between the heat and flea population, my mom wants a shorter haired dog.....I know, I know, way too fussy, but thats my mom!

Labradors are a good overall choice.

Restrangled..If your not home and some comes to the door they get pretty pissed off..They aren`t a hyper dog at all,so they`ll mostly just sleep while your out...............

aha! yup Florida would be way too hot. We just got ours shaved and he looks hilarious ^^ poor fella But here in NC it gets pretty toasty too. Well good luck with your search!

Outlaw, Labs sound like my old Dobes at 5 and 8. Sleep and protect.....they get up at 5:30 for breakfast, eat and take a run, go back to bed and get up again at 2:00 to eat again, go out and have a big run about 7:00 pm. Back to bed for the night at about 10:00pm.
If there are any sounds, noises in the neighborhood, or someone rings the doorbell, they are right on it. Otherwise, passed out cold or follow me around the house or outside, and they always know when someone is in the kitchen~

Then again, there is the best kept secret in dogs http://fieldspaniels.org/ I've had three. They are nothing like Cockers. They have great personalities. Males grow to over 50 pounds. They could make a stranger think twice.

Maybe a Mastiff. They may be huge, but docile, unless confronted. No one will mess with one, they are quite intimidating! A most loyal breed.
