Is that what you believe? I also heard that the anti-european campaign also had posters "Do you want a micro chip in your children?" Those people are just xenophobic. And obviously you have an issues with Germans.
I guess that it is the price for democracy that ignorant people can put their thumb up or down.
I'm not ignorant at all on these issues. You're putting up a strawman argument there my friend with the microchip nonsense. Did the German goverment not have a referendum because they don't want their ignorant citizens to have a voice in this huge decision?
I have no issues with the German people, or any other European people. My grandfather was German. And I am not anti-european. As I said, the economic union has been very successful for everyone involved. This specific treaty that was attempted to be forced on everyone WITHOUT A VOTE had specific problems. Its vauge wording left it open to interpretation. That interpretation would be done by the European courts. They could decide later what the treaty means after everyone had already signed up to it.
The German and French governments are very open about their goals for the future of Europe. These goals include a Euorpean army and a much stronger central government. One of the first things they want to change is to control the corporate tax rates for all countries in the union. No, they don't want to microchip our children (as far as I know). Yes there was some scare mongering being done during the campaign like you mentioned above. But this was happening on BOTH sides of the debate. The YES side said that Ireland would forever pay for our rejection of this treaty and we may even be kicked out of europe. Neither side was totally honest.
The problem is that Europe is very culturally diverse. Under this treaty all countries would basically get there rules from whatever the largest countries decide upon. You're in Germany so this doesn't seem like a bad idea to you. But the citizens of the small countries would completely lose our voice. I don't have a problem with the German people, but I do have a problem putitng my trust in German politicians to be looking out for the welfare of Irish citizens. Hell we can't even trust our own politicians to look after us!
There were legitimate reasons to not like this treaty. It's not right to say that everyone who rejected it was an ignorant nationalistic xenophobe.
