When we were car shopping we did research in Consumer Reports ,very helpful .
Pontiac Vibe (which has Toyota drive train and engine ) rated very high on reliability and good gas milage .We just liked the little bit better ride in the HHR.
Speaking of cars...(gulp)

When we were on vacation, we rented a Mazda 6. It is very roomy, giant trunk, tons of features, lots of pickup and it got over 35 MPG. It had 400 miles on it when we rented it; so, the mileage should go up once it is fully broke-in in 15-20K miles. The Toyota Corolla we rented on another vacation with 27K miles, was a cheap POS and only got 33 MPG. When people try and compare the Corolla to the Prius, they have no clue, it is like comparing a rib-eye stake to tofu, the first one is food the second is trash.

We hired an Infinity convertible before we bought the blue sports car and I loved it! Such fun - it would suit you. Very comfortable and easy to drive. Great for driving along the coast a la Thelma & Louise stylee!
