oh boy, this sounds like it will get as complex as the blood issue.
what if you study correspondence for a full degree, but work hard and do it in 2 years?
what about apprenticeships?
is it just desk-jobs that are wrong? can you become an electrician through a polytech - is it only university that is off limits?
and when you say the elders wouldn't have freedom of speech to counsel the others ... what are they going to be counselling them then? Is this just step one before they clamp down on all the pubs?
either way ... they are going to lose a hell of a lot more than they have bargained for on this one. I'd say they've miscalculated hugely on the mood amongst the 'sheep'.
Most dubs I know are very pro education these days, and had got the impression the GB was easing up on this and that the easing would continue.
Please don't quit! Keep going and finish. Your future is so bright. My mom can't bring herself to be happy for my success, either, but your dad might be trying to protect himself. Since you are already in school, maybe all he has to do is a don't ask don't tell act. Maybe he wants you in college but also wants to keep his eldership. |
This is all highly illogical. I have a family member at Patterson. He and his wife just completed thier degrees from a correspondence school without repercussions. I'm pretty sure they did that in case the hammer of god (layoff) hits them.
You can't go to trade school to become a registered nurse anymore. It requires a 4 year bachelor of science degree. Lots of courses in blood, transfusions, ethics, morality politics of health care and critical thinking. I think many elder's don't realize this. Nursing school was instrumental to me in leaving the JW's.
So, if they are smart, they will scratch that one off the list too. Care aid/practical nurse might still be OK.

The reasoning behind this is that an elder is encouraging their children to attend college, they would not be able to counsel the rank and file on the issue.
Oh, so that is their reasoning on the matter?
The Watchtower has PAID the college tuition for people to obtain engineering and law degrees! This has been verified here at JWD with the speicific names of the individuals who went to college at Watchtower's expense.
By the above reasoinnig The Watchtower is not in a position to provide counsel concerning NOT going to college.

this is not correct. Trade school maybe not...but 4 year degree is not required.... Please note that this program has one of the highest pass rates for RNs taking their licensing exams in that state and the country......this is a 2 year program normally....though it does take some longer...but it is an associates NOT a bachelor....
Ironically, I know a JW who graduated from this program and immediately moved out of state and became a nurse...still a dub though....makes great money...some of the elders in her original congo (one I was in) criticized her for doing this 2 year program...thought she should just keep pioneering....

Concerning a Bethellite that The Watchtower sent to college, see Seeker4's thread on the subject:
Rob Pollock - Sent to Engineering College by WTS?
http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/10/101976/1.ashx
When elder's start to refer to their outlines concerning these new college "rules", the name of Rob Pollock should be brought up to show the inconsistency of The Watchtower concerning going to college.
Rob Pollock was the Bethelite (sent to college while at Bethel). When we visited Bethel in the 80s, Rob, at the time, was being sent to college for engineering classes by the WTS. We were asked to keep quiet about it, as the Society sending Bethelites to college was considered something the friends in general would not understand, and might resent. I also heard at the time that with his work at Bethel and the schooling, Rob was hardly making any meetings for months at a time.
Rob went on to become one of the main engineers overseeing the Patterson, NY Bethel project.
So has this recent directive made it to all of the congregations yet? or are there still some elder bodies who haven't found out yet?
I will promote it anyways. Hopefully, it will be enough to prevent me from having to go to that Value
Destroyer Training School.
