  Crisis of Conscience, Paul the Myth Maker, True History of Christianity - sammieswife.

  apocalypse delayed is a good read so far.

  I found that one to be the most honest and objective of all the "apostate" books that I've read. He doesn't completely bash them, and even defends them in some instances.

  Also, 1984 by George Orwell. It's not actually about the witnesses, but a lot of it could certainly apply, especially their penchant for re-writing their own history.

  For those who haven't given up on God and Christianity, I recomend "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis and "All of Grace" by C.H. Spurgeon. seek2find

  any tom robbins books are intensely crazy. I would reccomend anything from him, especially Jitterbug Perfume and Another Roadside Attraction.

  From Elaine Pagels:

  The Origin of Satan

  The Gnostic Gospels

  Both excellent, well researched and insightful on how we got to this point of "Christianity"

  The Lost Gospel: the story of Q and Christian Origin, by Burton Mack--changed my view of christianity altogether

  and my favorite, but most challenging:

  The Hero with a Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell; an examination of the similarity of all hero legends, including Jesus, Moses and Mohammed.

  All are carefully researched and footnoted.
