Yes, I know 1914 is the Big One, but I'll bet there are plenty of ordinary JWs who are very fuzzy on the subject and would believe any explanation fed them. Remember, the average JW gets weak in the knees at the very thought of trying to explain the 1914 chronology!

Wasn't it the Worldwide Church of God that basically told their followers, "We were wrong"? Yeah, they lost a ton of followers, but not all of them. People will hang onto whatever they want to hang onto.

I firmly believe the entire governing body could be caught on tape knocking off a bank before heading back to Bethel to have sex with each other, and there are plenty of JWs who would chalk it up to "imperfection,", "apostate lies," or the like.

Down turn in publishers is not going to signal a great deal..IMO. There will still be areas where advancement will take place. The downturn will be blamed on materialism etc.

My assertion is based upon the view that current doctrines
are utterly unsupported speculation at best and that they
require little logical response. As such, the determined loyalty
of JWs is simply a matter of habit, emotion, and ignorance.
Thus, such devotion may evaporate collectively, if Divine
intervention fails to arrive - explicitly.

I think the difference now to the 70's 80's is that they can no longer control the information that reaches their members.

Also, people are more educated now and all of this will hurt them in the developed world.

They are still having growth in third world / recovering countries where, let's face it, if you've lived through hell you would be desparate for the nice promises that the WTS gives people. Also, all US style religions seem to do pretty well there as people grab for anything 'western'.

I don't think they will be getting up for one more punch ... and the child abuse punches have still to hit them.

People are tired. The gloss has well and truly worn off the WTS propaganda just as the leadership seems most inept (braindead?).

(On topic, though, I do believe the fact that the Society is now for the very first time in its checkered history having to schlep another batch of very date-sensitive "prophecies" not merely across a new century demarcation, but a spanking new millennium with the system "continuing on just as from creation's beginning" might just result in the kind of losses that may not be the death knell but will so dissipate the coffers so as to appear deathlike.)

wt getting involve sith UN, FEMA etc shows where they are heading, the got money to stay in balance, no matter what.

Specially after the old GB die, anything can happen, blame the dead, wrong understanding etc., they did it with russell and rutherford so...

There are always people following all kind of crazy leaders. Just make sure they do it having the facts, one way or the other, available for them to verify. True seekers will notice.

Did you investigate the wt past? any effort in that direction?

same thing with new jw. By the time the truth about the truth reach them they many not care what really happened, chronology or whatever, as long as they are doing ok inside.

UNLESS they are seeking... or open to new knowledge, not beleiving they know it all, the usual jw mindset as a whole.

At least that is general tipical mentality.

You make a good point. Almost all of what Russell taught is considered "apostate," and so is most of what Rutherford taught. Virtually none of the many books written by Fred Franz are in print. To re-print them would be highly embarrassing.

Yet, there are still 6 million dubs running around, with many convinced they've got the wisdom of the ages and blinding light in their doctrines.

Several times the society has survived after losing about 3/4 of their membership. No doubt it will happen again.

People who think they can fully "bring down" the Watchtower Corporation are fooling themselves.
