am middle-aged and have no retirement savings at all or even a paid for house because I bought into this delusion when I was young and spent my time slogging mags for free instead of working for my financial future. That is the price I will pay for wising up too late. Karma is a bitch. Cause and affect. I am very appreciative I live in a social welfare country such as Canada so that I will not be on the street begging when I retire.
    How is this accomplished?

We have Canada Pension every one pays into mandatory from their job + Old age Pension + more if you are senior and disabled. If you don't have a paid for house there is subsidized senior co-op housing and rental supplements for high rental areas. For instance, if a senior had maximum pension they may get $1500 dollars a month. A one bedroom apartment in the most expensive city in Canada, Vancouver, might normally be $1500. A co-op charges a maximum percentage of your income, so they would just have to pay $500. Pharmacare covers drugs for low income seniors. Government subsidized medical insurance premiums and nursing homes if you can't afford to pay. It's all based on income levels and is available as benefits for any who qualify. Not really considered "welfare", just benefits available to all seniors of low income. Low income is anything under $24,000 a year. Of course, since I'm at the tail end of the baby boomers, the whole system will be bankrupt by the time I retire anyway! LOL. I am so screwed!

Possibly the religion with the most satisfying answer is now Anglican, which since 2000 says that no matter what, everyone will get resurrected to heaven for a second chance.

LOL! That is a very satisfying thought. Oh, if only I could buy into the delusion once again. How happy (and satisfied!) I woud be.

I have known a few JWs like this. They get into massive, growing debt, because it soon want matter. So life becomes ever harder because soon never arrives. The other Scripture that applies is Ecc 12 "expectation postponed is making the heart sick".

So true. So true. My hubby's financial plan now consists of secretly buying Lotto 649 tickets at the gas station and hoping no JW' from his congo are there to see him do it! LOL! I resist the temptation to call him a hypocrite, just in case he wins!

So all these entitlements are paid for through some sort of "tax" deduction from some others' paychecks.

If you don't have a paid for house there is subsidized senior co-op housing
rental supplements for high rental areas
Government subsidized medical insurance premiums and nursing homes if you can't afford to pay.

So, if I want to spend my life as a pioneer placing WT literature and don't give a rat's ass about my future financial security, I really don't have to worry.....somebody else will pay my way in my old age. Am I right or wrong about this?

Everyone pays a portion of their own paycheck towards their Canada Pension. There is a minimum and a maximum. Housewives/mothers get leveraged for the years they are not working, if your husband dies, you get a portion of his, etc. The others are supplements for low-income paid out of the general tax fund. Medical coverage is universal for everyone and premiums are mandatory but not for poor people and seniors, they are subsidized. Yes, they tax the hell out of all of us for all this support!

Yeah, sweet deal eh? It used to be worse. In the 1980's it was so easy to get welfare, that many pioneers applied for it and didn't even try to look for work. They pioneered on the taxpayer's dime. It was such a "bad witness" that they had to give talks about it telling young people not to quit school and go on welfare and pioneer. They had to work and pioneer on top of that. It is no longer possible to do that though. Welfare benefits have dropped for everyone and now you have show proof you are looking for work. It is also almost impossible to live on it, they have dropped benefits so much because so many people were abusing it. You used to be able to stay on it until your youngest kid was 19 if you were a single mom. Now as soon as they are school age you have to get a job and get off it. What I think is just ridiculous is some of the benefits, like old age pension are available to Seniors who are very wealthy, just for being old! But if you ever mention reducing the benefits they seniors go on a rampage and they are probably the biggest voting demographic here in Canada. Still, overall, it is a good system. You never see the levels of homeless people due to poverty on the streets here. Almost every homeless person is so because of addiction or mental illness. Cog

I have traveled a long way and learnt a fair amount about life and philosophy but one truth stands out above all else.

You can pick your friends. You can pick your nose. But you can't pick your friend's nose!
