I had my baseline colonoscopy last year (in my middle 50s). Uncomfortable, a little humiliating, but so reassuring to hear that all is well.
The procedure itself is not bad. I remember saying "OUCH" a few times. I may have said some other words that I hope the doctor will not hold against me, but the great thing is ...... I don't remember anything else about it! The only tedious part is taking the stuff that cleans you out.
A journey into my colon -- and yours...Important read for those over 50...

My doctor told me I may need one in a few months. I have symptoms of IBS and the doctor put me on a high fiber diet. If that doesn't work he said I may need one to rule out colon cancer. He says I'm way to young to have that so we're going with the fiber first.
I told my mom about it. She told me I wouldn't like it. I wanted to ask her if it was worse than anal sex but I didn't.

I am a certified colon therapist so I find this very interesting.

Now, I really have to ask this.
What exactly does a colon "therapist" do?

editted to add: Parakeet, you were not sedated for this procedure?
Can I have the name of your doctor, so I'll know who not to go to for this?

I've been getting colonoscopies every year for the last 7 years. So far they've removed 3 polyps, all benign. It isn't the most exciting way to spend 2 days - 1 for prep and 1 for the procedure, but it's important. I like to reward myself with a trip to a Chinese buffet afterwards.

Yes I was, but I could have used just a bit more. When I have my next one done, I will ask for more sedation. Even so, the pain only merited an "ouch." I wasn't in serious pain or anything close to it. -

My brother in law died of colon cancer, because he put off a colonoscopy. He fought it for 3 years and died a horrible death.
Get your colonoscopies!!!

A colonic therapist cleans the colon out by flushing water through it and by pressure removing the waste from it..........Its a sophisticated enema. Very comfortable, no smell or mess. Its done with 2 tubes, one going into the colon and one going out for waste that goes directly into the sewer drain. Its better than having to drink that awful goop they make you drink to clean it. Cleaning the colon regularly helps prevent colon cancer and colon problems.

The procedure itself: a piece of cake.
The industrial-strength Drano to clean you out first: priceless.

I think I would rather drink the gunk to cleanse the day before altough I about puked it out the first time I tried to down it...OH and stay close to a toilet for about a day...actually I had to take the stuff twice before the procedure...
