Groceries here go up on a monthly basis. I must say though if the food label says organic it pretty much is - we have got some high standards and if not they get taken to some food coucil / court.
I read food labels - the ones that get me are the cereals - they tell you x number of minerals & vitamins, they don't tell you that they took more out than what is in because they've added all the sugar, dried fruit, nuts and that.
I'm into my fresh veggies & probiotic yoghurts - notice that the healthy food stuffs are so much more expensive than the crap.
oooh and another thing that irks me - weighless products - they are just a marketings scam hiding behind a brand in order to raise their prices astronomically. If you compare food labels, most fat content is the same or a % or so less, but the carbohydrate % in the weighless product can be nearly double - carb = complex sugar = harder to burn off = likely to turn to fat......
Thanks for bringing this up, snakes.
Last night I bought a 16oz bottle of Minute Maid O. J. which is no longer 16oz. It's 15.2oz.
Now that's the kind of crap that makes me mad. Just leave it at 16 and raise the price. Don't raise the price and lower the volume.
I'll have some more for you later.

And let's not forget the monosodium glutamate, in many disguises, that they put in foods these days. Some of those disguises are hydrolyzed protein (check your stuffing and broths for this ingredient), autolyzed yeast (in cheese foods), yeast extract, gelatin, sodium/calcium caseinate, textured protein, and plant protein extract. If you see these on the ingredient list, you can be sure that there is free processed glutamate.
There are other ingredients that could have glutamate, depending on the processing. Malt extract is hydrolyzed starch--if there was any protein in it before processing, it will have glutamate from that. Soy protein isolate is a prime suspect--not only may it have glutamate, but it is processed with hexane. Whey protein concentrate and carrageenan can also have it. The sneakiest is when they list it as "spices" or "natural flavors". If you see those ingredients, the companies could add MSG in pure form and label it as a "spice" or a "natural flavor" without listing it as monosodium glutamate.
I believe there should be disclosure of this ingredient in foods. More people are trying to cut back or eliminate monosodium glutamate for health reasons, and have as much right to accurate labeling as people looking to reduce fats or carbs, or that need to be aware of allergy ingredients. While the additives should not be outright banned, it would help if people knew that a food has a certain quantity of processed free glutamate per serving, so they could limit the stuff they eat.
On my last shopping trip, I decided to try to avoid HFCS altogether, so I read the labels on everything. Needless to say, it took forever. I had to buy almost all organic! That stuff makes my wallet cry.
No matter what types of groceries we buy, I've notice that our grocery bill has gone up about 1/3 this year. We typically go to the grocery store every two weeks. Our typical bill was between $180.00 - $200.00. Now the typical bill is $300.00.
Convenience is costly.

monosodium glutamate, in many disguises
knowledge is power. Unfortunately, my nutrition class is making me paranoid . I know I am not going to be able to completely avoid it.... It is funny how many different ingredients are just MSG.... but who knows this? Not the average shopper.

yep... I was trying to buy bread and find that everything has HFCs and other weird ingredients... and any that dont... sky high..same with the yogurt..I know I spent 10 min looking at all the different varieties of yogurt and finally, at the far end of one shelf, found ONE yogurt that was a) all natural and b) all natural did not include any gums...
on a side note...I seen some Bubble Gum Breyers ice cream at one store the other day...at least that is truth in advertising...not appetizing...but truthful.

I don't know if you are single or have family with you, Snakes. I have my wife and youngest son with me so I buy the one-gallon pails of ice-cream. $4.99 a gallon. A bit more than my gasoline but more environmentally friendly perhaps....
On package size, check bacon!! I used to buy pound bacon packages. Now they are 12 oz and the size of the pack looks almost identical to what I recall the full pounders were.
Is it no wonder that poor people in this country have the worst eating habits? The only food they can afford is full of crap. And that is if they are educated enough to look. I knew alot of this...but taking a nutrition class...OMG....... I am scared of how much I don't know...Sometimes ignorance is bliss...
Exactly, it costs a grip to eat healthy. I try to eag sugar free, whole foods, and you really have to search high and low to find groceries that don't have some form of sugar in them. The cheap stuff is full of sugar and chemicals you should never eat.
