I saw the Matrix once, I loved it. I just want to be the One who can move that fast! I thought alot about this idea after the movie, of this reality not really being reality, but in our minds. This would make sense to me and explain why certain things occur. Such as the times you are talking to a JW and they give an off the wall comment, you're thinking, "Is this person serious?" And they go on smiling as if what they said was the most sane thing in the world. Oh yeah I can almost see their little tubes and all of the wires running from their body.

Yup, solipsism (comp. solitude), the idea that you are the only conscience in the universe and that everybody/everything else exists in your mind. Some have asserted that it according to Occam's Razor is the simplest explanation of all known phenomena, but I haven't heard anybody who really believes it. It is certainly irrefutible, and untestable, and as such, arguably a meaningless position.

The Matrix "theory" is not the same. Fascinating, and when watching the movie, one cannot help wondering what-if.... However, even in that movie the objective reality DID exist, and had existed as it does now some years earlier, it was just now simulated by a Virtual Reality world powered by humans as batteries. Wondering how the prequel will be...

Abaddon..Neal Stephenson is a great SF writer. Be sure to catch The Diamond Age by him if you haven't already read it! And the test you suggested of testing reality is a bit harsh old chap, stepping in front of a train indeed! I prefer the good old "pinch me test" to see if I'm dreaming

Jan, I'm of course kidding about this whole thing, just in case some newbie out there thinks I believe this is a version of the Matrix...NOT! I know what you mean by the philosophical position though. Did you know that TWO Matrix movies are in the works already? They are going to be released back to back from what I read. The scripts are still top secret but I'm hoping that at least one of these movies will be as innovative as the first was.

Wendy...it all fits! The elders are the "agents" and the apostates are all those who have taken the blue pill and can see just how deep the rabbit hole really is. The dubs are just the sleeping masses who are being milked for their energy. The submarine/hovercraft is the Internet. What more could you want for proof? Oh yes...ah the lady in Red, why that is you my dear!

Of course And The Diamond Age is high on my list of favorite SF books, along with Snowcrash. And I think both these book describe pretty realistic -- or at least possible -- scenarios. Who knows what nanotechnology and advances in biology can bring?
