This one talks about my state of mind! Heart "Crazy on You" My oldest daughter use to hear me sing this song (before I had a paralyzed vocal cord). She thought it was something I made up! ~I wanna go craaaazzzzy on YOU! Craaaazzzy on YOU!~ I think she thought that I was going crazy!

MsMcducket,
Here is one for you. Admittedly a household name, but at this stage who cares.
Curtis Mayfield: 'We people Who Are Darker than Blue'.

Mayfield did a live recording of this song, which was stunning, in '70 in New York and is featured on his 'Curtis Live' album. I was just a kid (17) and on my second visit to NY and was there in a club during the race riots, one of about five white faces. It was a magical evening. This album is one of the best live albums that I have ever heard.

Here's a great old songwriter (who can't sing but women don't care) and a new singer/songwriter (who sings beautifully) singing a tribute to an icon:

Six, I loved Curtis Mayfield "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is one that got pass me! But, I like it! You should hear Van Hunt singing "Character". He reminds me of Curtis Mayfield. And you know that I love Kris Kristoffersen! I just like to look at him!

Dan, one way to find these somewhat obscure people is to find someone you like, and then see who they like. Like I just found the following, Norah Jones covering a John Prine song, Thats The Way That The World Goes Round. It's fun to see her doing it, but I don't personally think she and her band really do anything special with this song; it's fricken great when Prine does it.
Before this song, he always tells the story of the woman who pestered him before a show to sing the "Happy Enchilada" song. After a few back and forths and him thinking "wth, I don't have a 'happy enchilada' song?", he had her sing a few lines. "Ok, y'know, 'it's a happy enchilada and you think you're gonna drown'".
There's a half and inch of water and you think you're gonna drown:
