    Meatloaf

I'm not much of a cook, but since no one has explained to the 2 brits what it is, i'll take a shot. It's ground beef mixed w breadcrumbs, spices and maybe some mashed potatoes. It is placed in a pan and baked. Tomatoe sause/soup can be mixed in or poured on top before baking. It's quite good.

Probably some of the pro chefs here could furnish more details.

Here is a question of my own. What are bangers?

    Hey SS don't forget Ketchup!!!!!

Do you guys have REAL ketchup over there or just that catsup/tomato sauce krap. In AU & NZ the only place to find KETCHUP was in American Fast food chains, so a few of us stocked up on the packets for when we ate at local places!!!

I mean you'd go somewhere get this delicious burger and steak fries, and if you asked for some Ketchup the waitress would wrinkle there nose and bring you out some kind of tomato past that's only resemblance to Ketchup was perhaps the color.

Hey...SS is that stuff then baked in pastry so its like a pie thing?

Bangers are elongated cylindrical shaped meat things. Content can be dodgy so pick good ones?

BTW there is a dish using them called 'Toad in the Hole'.

No pastry. Just the above mixture baked in a pan about 5" wide, 8" long and about 4" deep. Maybe it's the same as a casserole dish.

ISP no it's not baked in a pastry, it's just like a loaf of meat, hence the name meatloaf

I think I have tried Daddies sauce but it's no Heinz Ketchup!!!

    Hi Eman & Simon,

    Here's how I would/did make meatloaf:

    1 lb ground beef
    1 onion, chopped
    1 egg, beaten
1 cup or so of uncooked oats
    1-2 teaspoons mustard
    dill seasoning
Enough milk to make it nice consistency

Mix it all up and top with ketchup and form like a loaf. Put in pan and bake at 325 for an hour or so.

You can add any seasonings that you would like with beef. Steak sauce would be good. Chopped celery. Grated cheese in and on top.

    Yum-m-m-m.

    OK re. Meatloaf!

We have a dish that is called Beef Wellington which is meat in a pastry.

Daddies sauce is made by Heinz.

Oops--forgot to add that it makes yummy sandwiches from the leftovers the next day. Of course, refrigerate it!

Another one of my favorites is to take a rump roast, roast it at 350 for an hour, then turn heat down to about 175 (or whatever the internal temp desired) and slow-roast it for about 10 hours. It is SO gourmet! Then, I'd slice it thinly and make an 'au jus' with the drippings and serve it. There weren't any leftovers!

The thing is that higher heats make protein tougher and the slow-roasting makes it so-o-o tender and it gives it a unique flavor.

Well, I guess our holiday meal reflects our heritage here at home. I'm only 2nd gen. American on my Dad's side.
So I prepare dishes that I grew up with and love.
Of course, since Rocky gets a turkey from his job at UPS,I bung that in the oven as well.
We start with an antipasto that includes fresh mozzarella. It makes the best dipping for the French loaf! I'll make pate if I feel particularly energetic lol. The cognac in it gives it that special flavour.
I'll bake calzone. Not like the ones bought at stores. It's a baked pie consisting of hot Italian sausage, hard boiled eggs and ricotta.
    Various veggies and another salad.
A good merlot,or iced tea for those like myself, who don't really drink.
Cannoli or zabaglione for dessert, with espresso or cappucinno.
    Figs and nuts......
    abbondanzza!!
PS.Your cards are in the post! mangia molte to ya's lol! luv, tina
