Would it be possible for you to go to a convention that he is not attending? Depending on how big the arena is, there are often conventions for different groups about every weekend. They're all exactly the same. If you really wanted to understand what a convention was like but didn't want to make your friend feel awkward, going to one he isn't at will allow you to do that.

It's like going to Super Kingdumb Hall. At the SuckAss Assembly, all the buzzwords and key phrases come in by the truckloads, they scare children into following the message, they place the baptizims at these events to help insure you follow through (it's not likely you'd change your mind with so many people watching you), and they still want you to make your own lunch and let it get cold and/or soggy before lunchtime comes.
