There has been about 5 trillion talks on donating money. Never heard so many talks on this before... They have said in talks a few times that when the society charged per mag or whatever, the society got a lot more in donations then they do now and the cost in production has gone up.

Anyone have any feedback on this?

Times are tough and folks have to scrimp and cut back wherever possible. Too bad the Watchtower has to add the guilt trip on the R+F. Those that are still donating are probably hurting more than others.

I gotta ask myself . . . When's the last time I heard of a company that quit charging for it's product and made more money . . . ?

On the other hand . . . Watch Tower Inc built virtually all of Patterson AFTER the donation agreement started. Check it out. Go to Google Earth and type in Patterson, NY. It's south east of the town. Circle drives and blue roofs. Hard to miss.

Then go to Wallkill, NY. Just updated by Google to about 60' elevation. Very clear pictures. Edited to add: Go to 900 Red Mills Road, Wallkill, NY

It's almost straight west of the town of Wallkill. West of the airport, west of the riv

Those nickles and dimes my brother and I sent in from selling magazines on dirty street corners instead of playing with our friends added up.

The GB made a serious mistake in going to the donation system instead of having a set price for the literature. By making it more voluntary the JWs became less inclined to donate. But, had they kept to the old system they would have had to file sales tax reports in every State in the USA that has a sales tax and pay the tax which in California is over 8% in many localities. This wouldn't have been a problem for the Watchtower, as they would just let the rank and file pay the tax for them. However, in California the State Board of Equilization would know how much money the Watchtower is making through magazine and book sales in the State, and this is something the GB doesn't want the JWs or the government to know.

I guess it isn't enough that they have a free labor pool to both publish and distribute their trash and also have a guaranteed customer base. This kind of stuff really pisses me off. I can just see my 65-year old jw mother, who is still working a part time job and pioneering whip out her checkbook to make as large a donation as possible.
