It's not simple, but it's also not THAT complicated. Yes, there's genetics that influence somewhat, but weight overall comes down to calories eaten, and calories burned. This relates to how well you eat, and how active you are. This is not just during a 'diet' or during a short term, this is over years and decades. This is why people tend to gain weight as they get older. The metabolism slows, but the calories consumed remains the same, or even increases with age.
Of course you have some who no matter what cannot lose weight as there are other issues. I'm not referring to them. I'm talking about what I truly believe to be the majority of overweight people who actually could lose the weight.

Well like I always say, people can chose to have either a sixpack or a sixpack too many

Robert,
just to clarify, not only do I eat well (healthful), but I come from a long line of "health nuts". I am very familiar with how to eat healthy. And I am very fortunate not to have to worry about how much I spend doing it. But think about trying to raise a family on very little, with many mouths to feed. The fattiest lowest quality cuts of meat are much cheaper than ground turkey. Even the fattier chicken thighs are less expensive than the extremely low fat breasts. White rice by the bag full is cheaper than brown. Trans fatty margarine cheaper than real butter. A huge package of no name creme filled cookies is less expensive than two apples. The percentage of poor that are obese is much higher. Those free school lunches? Have you looked at one of those menus? Unbelievable. The last time I looked at one, which admittedly was a couple of years ago, it had some form of hot dog 2-3 times a week! Middle and high schools have deals with the brand name soda, chip, and snack people to put vending machines in their schools. I believe there are concerned groups out there trying to make changes in this area.

OMG!! I had lunch with my 2nd grade daughter last year, and I couldn't believe it! A foot long hot dog, fries, and chocolate milk!
THIS is where it starts. We as a country need to raise our priorities to start feeding healthier food from youth.

It is certainly cheaper to eat healthily over here.
I never buy frozen or processed foods, everything i buy is fresh. If i go to the local market and buy all my veg from there, shop around there for the fresh meat, it is amazing how cheap it is to eat healthily, rather than buying off the supermarket shelf.

At 6'3" and 200 lbs your BMI would be 25.0. You'd still be considered slightly overweight by the US government.

Not saying you are but that's how it's determined, and probably how they came up with the figures in the article. -

Robert said: There is a portion of the population (myself included) that would never let themselves get fat. Those who work out and eat well. I never understood how people could let themselves get so fat. And yes, I say "let" because we DO have control about how well we eat and how much excercise. And it's not about money. You can eat well and not spend a lot of money. Anyways, at some point don't people look in the mirror and say "enough is enough"?
FHN said: There was a time I thought things were so simple. Boy did someone upstairs make me eat my words. I want to apologize to all people who struggle with their weight for saying such uninformed things as the comment above.
and FHN also said: Robert, not everyone eats fast food. Perhaps the person who cannot afford McDonalds, cannot afford to buy fresh vegetables either, unless they are on sale. You have how many people to feed from your ten dollars? I find it very sad when people try to make this a simplistic matter, when clearly, for many people it's not simplisitic. But go ahead, we'll smile while you gloat.
FHN: You go girl! My thoughts exactly. Robert, there are plenty of overweight and obese people, including myself who very seldom eat fast food and stick to basics like lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. There is so much more involved than eating right and exercise such as genetics, immobility due to physical disabilities and hormone levels. The hormone problem is especially agonizing, since it sometimes takes years, if ever, to get the right balance.

SL, any less than that i certainly wouldn't feel healthy. I feel good at around 205-210. I am large framed so i look and feel ok at that weight.
