Have you ever had a problem keeping your weight down?

Yes, at one point i was 265llbs. I am now around 215llbs, i could do with losing about another 10llbs to get to my ideal weight. 200llbs plus sounds alot, but i am 6ft 3in.

I want to hear from you three years from now to see how you've kept it off. Hopefully, you can keep it off. One thing that happens to many people who lose weight: your body will go into panic and make you feel very hungry until it forces you to eat enough to regain the weight. That is when it will be the biggest challenge to keep the weight from slowly coming back. Bodies think they are starving when you restrict calories significantly. They don't know you are trying to reduce your size. This is when your metabolism will slow and you will be hungrier than you ever were before you started dieting. It would be nice if people never dieted. Dieting can wreck a person's metabolism and start them in a yo yo that ends up in larger weight gains after each diet. People should be encouraged to eat healthy foods and get daily exercise when they are young. They should never be told to diet to reduce weight. The Diet industry in America makes billions from diets. They help to keep America's waistlines expanding. Yes, there are other reasons people gain weight and cannot lose it. I was once quite simplistic and judgmental in these matters. That is until I had several abdominal surgeries and had to take steroids and other medications that caused significant problems with my metabolism. I was also diagnosed with polycystic ovary disease, but only after it had caused a lot of weight issues. Last year all I did was grieve and I lost 40 lbs without trying. Weight is not as simple as what you put in your mouth. It does matter what you put in your mouth and what you do as far as exercise, but it's not a cure all.

I wasn't trying to judge, I was just pointing out that the weight problem may not be quite as bad as the article points out if BMI alone was used to calculate the statistics. I agree that there is a large (ha!) problem here in the states with obesity, and that the poor are affected more (hurray for HFCS!), but I don't think the sky is falling just yet.

    FHN,

I think you have misunderstood me, I haven't only just lost weight.

Funny enough it was about three years ago i got down to between 205-210. I have put a bit back on since i have stopped drinking about 6 months ago, probably because it was easier to eat sweet stuff, to keep my mind off alcohol.

For the last 3 or 4 years i changed my eating habits, rather than dieting i decided to eat healthily. In that time i also changed my job, from one standing around to one where i am physically active. These two things together made me lose weight and keep it off.

There are plenty of overweight people in Great Britain and Europe. Countries like Italy, France a Spain where there is a more relaxed pace of life, where people tend to be happier and they eat healthier fats tend to be the ones where people are slimmer and have less artery disease and stress related illness.

It's also been found that things like high fructose corn syrup that are added to nearly everything we Americans eat actually tricks your brain into thinking you haven't eaten a thing, so that you continue to feel hungry and you keep eating. Fructose is only one food additive that works against healthy weight.

SL, i didn't think you was trying to judge. I have no problem discussing my weight and don't mind any comments on it.

Dig, you just made one of my points: losing weight doesn't mean the same thing as losing weight and never gaining it back.

There is a program, the name of which escapes me now from England which covers those overwieght from that area. It is another one from the series how clean is your house.

I think the "going to be fat in 40 years" would apply to most across the world.

I was one of those girls who grew up skinny...tall and able to eat as I wanted. If I put on 5 pounds I could take it off in 2 or 3 days. Never, ever had a problem,.....until I went through menopause......NO MATTER WHAT I DO....I CANT GET BELOW A SIZE 9/10.

Some may consider that average, but I am extremely small boned and 5' 8 .....the scale tells me my fat percentage is way out of wack. I know it too. I use to wear size 0 to 4.

It's a real struggle the older you get.

Not too sure, but it seems to me this study is probably based on the B.M.I. SacrificialLoon pointed out that it is quite inaccurate. The B. M.I. exists just to keep people self conscious about their weight. It helps keep the "diet industry in business.....or maybe not could be wrong.

I noticed that after sitting at my desk too much my skirts/pants were getting a little tight. So a change was in order. Thankfully I have a gauge to go by ... those lovely charts (height to weight ratio and BMI). Looks like I will be able to reach my goal (getting back to my birth weight) within the next year or so. Though, I suspect that my bones may weigh more than the mere 6 pounds I was born at, so I was thinking of having some of those removed as well. I will post pictures when I reach my goal (you may have to disregard the coffin I am lying in while the picture is taken)

Those stupid studies can say all they want, in the end, if you are active and healthy, don't let any idiot crunching numbers all day tell you that you should weigh less than your allowable luggage. The culture of fear that is created is so maddening. And we wonder why young girls have body image issues!
