Y'know, Simon, every musician I know is always strapped for cash, so you should be able to buy a sweet guitar used in your $600-700 range. Reminds me of a song I once heard peformed by Pat Donahue on Prairie Home Companion:

do not buy an ovation. the neck/body joints are weak and have a tendency to fold. complete waste of time/money.
