The tipping point

    From Wikipedia:

"The term tipping point describes a point at which a slow gradual change becomes irreversible and then proceeds with gathering pace. It is derived from the metaphor of a rigid solid object being tilted to a point where it begins to topple."

Has the watchtower reached such a point? This thought was sparked by a thread about changes in the bookstudy arrangement. It seems that changes are coming at the dubs fast. I think the society is in trouble and knows it, the problem is that every one of their solutions produces about three new problems.

A few years ago on this board I said that people leaving the Watchtower would be like a bad faucet, at first just a drip. Then a faster drip. Then a really annonying drip, then the water is just running. As the number of ex-witnesses grows, and they have trouble recruiting converts the ratio of witnesses to ex's begins to change dramitically. What happens when Joe Dub wakes up to the fact that all his friends are gone? And now he can reconnect with them via the internet.

I don't think the Watchtower will ever disappear, but I think in a few more years it may be a shell of its former self. Think of Christian Scientists. Anybody know one? The watchtower is headed the same direction.

I think you are right on Jeff. We were really exited about the relief that one less meeting would mean to our schedule but then when I finally opened my eyes I tipped hard and fast , could'nt even bear to fade. How could I give one more talk? Give another comment? I just had to stop.

Could be, jeff. The acceleration of the growth of xjw discussion boards which is now taking place is exactly what is needed at this (tipping) point.

Great thought. I thorougly enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell's book, "The Tipping Point".

    http://www.gladwell.com/tippingpoint/index.html

We only need, say, about 20% of the population or less to be disillusioned to create an epidemic of change. Gladwell provides lots of examples in his book. Two characters can help things move along.

Mavens, respected experts. We have these with Barbara Anderson, Ray Franz, and the law firm of Love and Norris.

Connectors, those amazing people who seem to know everyone else. JWD has served as a great connector. Connectors within the organization have to be particularly circumspect because of the rampant paranoia. I imagine though, that if a select CO's and district overseers abandon ship that a great many more people in the organization will wonder...and wonder.

Just you wait until you read the book, A & G. Fewer are needed than thought. "Connectors" know HUNDREDS of people and can spread the message VERY fast.

from a post I made ayear ago on a related subject:

The thread title refers to a quote from Chris Anderson's book - The Long Tail - Why The Future of Business is Selling Less of More

Here is the quote in context from Chp.7 The New Tastemakers

"We’re entering an era of radical change for marketers. Faith in advertising and the institutions that pay for it is waning, while faith in individuals
is on the rise. Peers trust peers. Top-down messaging is losing traction, while bottom-up buzz is gaining power. Dell spends hundreds of millions each year on promoting its quality and customer service, but if you Google “dell hell” you’ll get 55,000 pages of results. Even the word “dell” returns customer complaints by the second page of results. The same inversion of power is now changing the marketing game for everything from individual products to people. The collective now controls the message.

For a generation of customers used to doing their buying research via search engine, a company’s brand is not what the company says it is, but what Google says it is. The new tastemakers are us. Word of mouth is now a public conversation, carried in blog comments and customer reviews, exhaustively collated and measured. The ants have megaphones."

This set me to thinking about how the WTBS have traditionally controlled the message, the brand and the public perception. And the recent development in the Sep KM about barring individuals from doing external research seems to me a reaction to the new reality dexcribed above.

Unfortunately for them its precisely the opposite from what their marketplace is demanding. So like King Canute attempting to stem the tide they will fail. The Internet is a tidal force that sweeps all before it. Perhaps the hardline JW's who do not grasp the fact that they have compartmentalized their lives and subcontracted their conscience - research everything you need to at the click of a mouse, except my religion, my way of life and my faith - will remain 'faithful' and not look behind the curtain. And in developing countries where large parts of the poulation have never made a phone call never mind seen the Internet may be willing to subjugate their right to full information for paradise 'soon'.

Anderson makes the point that we are leaving the Information Age and moving into the Recommendation Age. Information is freely available -perhaps too much to cope without good filters. Personal recommnendation from trusted sources provide one of these filters. And yet the WTBS is still trying to control information - too late for that now.

I recommend the book - no pun intended - also more info here http://www.longtail.com/the_long_tail/faq/index.html
