Preaching to Mask Problems

I have noticed that the witlesses seem to have more success in scamming people that are having ongoing problems in their lives. Usually they have stagnant jobs, poverty, are having zero success with the opposite sex, or are having major issues with their health (especially mental health). Those people usually fall for the promises that said problems will be removed in the New Dark Ages, that the witlesses will take care of them, or both.

Often, what will happen is that the person will become zealous in studying. They often study twice a week. And, they will prepare for the boasting sessions and make the necessary changes quickly. And they will participate actively in the boasting sessions. Those are also the ones that feel the boasting sessions are too short. And then, when it is time for field circus, they are the ones that take the lead.

What happens is that, while they are at the boasting sessions or in field circus, their problems will seem muted. That is because of masking. Often the effect of being at the boasting sessions or bashing people in the world makes them feel self righteous, effectively masking their problems for the time being. This is especially true at the bigger boasting sessions where they are listening to discourse after discourse, often emphasized, bashing the "filthy worldly people that are soon going to die". That makes them feel good for the time.

However, the underlying problem is still there. So, when the boasting session ends, they will find themselves facing it. Often, they will just step up their activity in field circus. And since they only feel good while doing something theocraptic, they are fully immersed in it. These individuals will soon realize that a regular amount of field circus is not effective any more, since they need it in order to mask the problem. They will start auxiliary pioneering, and tell you that they enjoy it. In fact, they truly believe that they enjoy pioneering. What they are enjoying is the temporary relief from the pain of the original problem. Very often, they will end up special pioneering or going where the need is great.

Very often, these ones will go to Beth Hell. The work is demanding and unreasonable. The field circus is also hectic. But that is the only place they feel relief from their problems, which are still there in full force (and often with new ones). So, they actually seem to enjoy it. Those are the ones that will give Beth Hell and pioneering a high recommendation.

Now, there are plenty of other things that mask problems. Common is recreation like video games, music, and sports. More damaging is gambling beyond one's means, alcohol abuse, and using drugs. One should realize that these activities too can become psychologically addictive (people depend on them to mask problems, which is responsible for all addiction involving video games, entertainment, or going online and much alcohol and drug abuse). However, none of these activities rewards God (or the Washtowel Slaveholdery) for creating or sustaining problems so they can be masked with self-serving activities that serves the one creating or maintaining the problem. And none will get a person involved in recruiting others into a scam. Has anyone ever hounded anyone into continuing to play Scramble or Centipede? I haven't seen any.

Next time someone honestly claims to enjoy the boasting session, thinks the Grand Boasting Session was too short, or wants to stay out all day every day in field circus, that person has a preaching problem. There is a serious problem in that person's life that only field circus or boasting sessions can mask. Which is not good for self or society.

Show me a man who hasn't got problems lol but you have right we all use different things to mask it, it's very much in line with the principle of the scripture "that its easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than a rich man into a kingdom of God" people who have good living, plenty of money and loads of fun things to do in their spare time need a real wake up call to focus on God, maybe only the inevitability of old age and death bringing them to a realisation of mortality eventually.

So religions do get most of their converts from people in troubled times but the prove of a belief in a person lasting is when they are back in happier times and with loadsa distractions to fill every moment.

    Great thread!! love it.

Stay busy enough and you don't have to think about your failed relationships, disfunctional marriage & family and best of all you can blame all these falilures on God. Gotta get out there and do more! No time to think about little Susie's depression, wifey's anorexia, or his own alcoholism (pick your maladies) How much is enough?

I think for some, being a jw is as much an addiction as an alcoholic or any other self destructive activity. The fact you see jw's every other day only helps to build the anticipation for the 'high' you get the next night/day at the k-hell 'where everybody knows your name', fake smiles and gathering of sycophants can be psychologically and emotionally addicting. Particularly for those who have fear death and 'the end'.

    Greetings, WTW:

Those who seek escape from the intolerable cruelties of life have not dealt with the intractable will of our soft-spoken leaders of kindly mien. They sooth our withered soul and parched spirit with the promise that they can, that they shall lead us into an era of uncommon prosperity and peace. I, for one, looked upon these princes among men and felt deep within me that, at long last, a direct line of communication had been established betwixt me, the merest of mortals, and the Divine.

[Third attempt after two losses of post]:

I wrote the above last night and decided to post it with my reply to you. Does it describe The New Dark Ages? Hope I don't lose it again.

You have clearly and succinctly expressed what so many of us have experienced as a troubling undercurrent of improperly diagnosed emotional distress. Doing more, doing more is the constant admonition, yet it only furthers the Society's agenda, never that of the exhausted and despairing grunt. I spend hours alone writing, walking ... whatever. The internal churning of my gut - the result of past subservience to a High Demand Organization - is gone. Relief is in the form of happy days and sweet sleep.

Thank you for what is typically one of your thought-provoking posts.

Good tread Wiz: I think I was attracted to the WT because I was born with some medical problems. These people promised not only immortality but more importantly that someday I could be okay. I tried real hard to fit in and do all the stuff but I could not keep up or measure up because of guess what? I had health problems. Have your read Erric Hoffers, Some thoughts on mass movements? some of you ideas remind me of his book. -----Art

Excellent post! I cannot agree more with everything that you said.

Low self-esteem? The dubs are for you. It'll make you feel good - for a while. Trust me, it won't last.

Right on. I will ask one question though. What is the main reason people join cults or gangs? I'm quite sure Wiz's post is the dead-on answer.

No doubt the WTS and most likely other similar cults attract converts for this reason, they provide a sense of belonging and purpose in life to those that feel rootless, directionless and adrift in life.

Grievious illusion though, the WTS is not there for the good of its members and all the anxious love for its fold is pretentious. Eventually many JWs end up with more problems than they can imagine at first due to the policies of the org.

To expound a bit on what Green and Oulaw said,

There will always be these people in the world. Therefore, the WTBTS will always be around for them. The best place in the world for those that suffer from low self-esteem.
