awesome research. I didn't know all that political stuff about Rutherford. Is that all documented in Penton's book?
It's ironic that the very person who set this "neutrality" doctrine in motion for the average JW was anything but neutral himself.

M.J....Penton has a great chapter in his book that deals with this, "Rutherford's New Nation -- 'The Theocracy' in America." Of course, there is also the whole thing about Rutherford's "theocracy" doctrine which claimed that God's kingdom was a real government that was operating in Rutherford's own organization in the here-and-now, and which will soon replace all earthly governments. His public statements freely took the mantle of American populism (such as his statement in 1938 that "I know every interest of the human race is at stake and the fundamental principles of the American government which have been held dear to the American citizens so long are in jeopardy and it now seems a certainty that the people are going to lose their liberties"), but Hoover may have suspected that he had ulterior plans. Rutherford may have seemed just a tad too obsessed with fifth column paranoia and the impending "destruction of America". After all, why did he claim that his group was not really a religion ("Religion is a Snare and a Racket," as they claimed) but manifested the government that would rise from the ashes of world totalitarianism?

Rutherford's booklets The Crisis (1933), Face the Facts (1938), Fascism or Freedom (1939), and Judge Rutherford Uncovers Fifth Column (1940) also set forth his views. It should not be forgotten that Rutherford's conspiracy theories were not entirely groundless; there were indeed Nazi sympathizers in America and as the Business Plot showed, some people were plotting to overthrow the government. But by claiming that all Catholic priests were fascists and that Catholic organizations were Nazi fronts for a totalitarian takeover of America, and especially by using hateful and insulting language against Catholics, Rutherford certainly did his part in fomenting unrest and stirring up agitation against JWs (who became victim to frequent mob violence in the 1930s and 1940s).
