The scroll from which jesus is supposed to have read was not the original hebrew. It was the greek septuagent. Practically all of them had taken out the tetragram. Jesus would have followed the tradition of the time, as did the writers of the nt. The wt's only support is what they manufacture. The catholic stand has much better foundation.

For a JW, their "trump card" is Luke 4:16-21, where Jesus reads from Isaiah's scroll and YHWH appears twice in the readng. "Surely Jesus, who knew how to pronounce God's name, would not bow to Jewish superstition and say 'Lord' instead."

To this day, Jews do not pronounce YHWH when they read it in the OT. They substitute Adonai.

Except that in the original Greek text of Luke, he did say "Lord". Only the NWT spuriously inserts "Jehovah" where the original text said "Lord". So it's not much of an argument.

In my opinion, the Divine Name should only be pronounced if you've had a really really good piece of halibut.

    Hey, I know all that.

But the JWs keep spouting the same argument. Its most recent appearance was the August 1 2008 Watchtower.

anyway you look at it if you read exodus 6:3 it makes no sense to substitute YHVH for lord , there God wants moses to know his personal name and use it . The jews also used the name when naming their children such as elijah or jesus . The catholic church is one of the most blaspeming religions in the christian world .

Satanus, what makes you think that a scroll read in a synagogue was anything but Hebrew. What language is used today in the synagogues when reading scripture?

Good point, earnest. I stand corrected on that. Nevertheless, it remains that the nt story does not have him pronouncing the name. Also, his reading of isa does not match exactly to any isa scrolls, masoretic or septuagint. It leaves the wt without a leg to stand on, as usual.

What about hallelujah (praise to jehovah/yahweh) will they still be saying/singing that? ironic if they do.

Isn't the JERUSALEM Bible a Catholic translation? That has the name "Yahweh" plastered all over in its OId Testament.

Can Catholics still use the Jerusalem Bible?
