To a JW, I would think that "cloning" of any sort would be considered sinful. Don'tcha think??

Someone told me that that the "holy grail" among the PETA set is the prospect of artificially growing animal flesh for consumption, rather than growing animals and slaughtering them for their flesh. Sounds pretty wild, not to mention a bit scary...but when you think about it purely from a manufacturing standpoint, it would make sense if it were at all possible to do it on a large scale.

My advice is don't eat meat at all!

I don't think that I have ever heard of anyone getting food poisoning from eating vegetarian food - almost invariably upset stomachs and food poisoning comes from eating meat or fish dishes.

Also, if there is going to be pathogen, for example something like CJD, introduced into the food chain, it is more than likely that it will be through meat.

Don't forget about the e-coli from tomatoes, lettuce, and hot peppers. Also, the tainted apple juice a few years back that killed several kids. But, it does seem to often come from undercooked meat products.

Numerous people got the mad cow disease from eating the affected meat.

Ok, I looked this up and am surprised. I did not know mad cow disease is believed to be caused by a misfolded protein. How exactly can this harm a person who *ingests* infected meat? I always understood that proteins are broken down during the digestive process and do not survive in the sense that they can affect the host eating them.

    I'm gonna do more research....

Yes - but let's talk risk here. What are the chances of any one individual dying (a pretty serious consequence) from drink apple juice compared with getting a bad stomach (could be life threatening but most likely more of an inconvenience)from eating chicken?

I should also add that I don't really believe that there is a significant risk of some lethal pathogen entering the food chain. I am simply stating that if were to happen it would be through meat products not vegetables.

You're probably right, but it's not going to change anyone's mind and convert them to vegetarianism. The risk is simply not that great.

    Mad cow disease

Look up prions on the web. I am not quite sure how certain the science is behind exactly what these agents are and how they propagate but they have certainly been the subject of much speculation.

drwtsn32: "People afraid of this are possibly from the same group that fears GM crops."

I was just talking to someone about that today. I write for a newspaper in a big agricultural area, and I was interviewing someone for a story I'm working on. He knows his stuff, and figures that GM crops are better for the environment: with some, only one type of herbicide or insecticide has to be used on the crops, rather than several. Which means, if we're not eating organic food — and who can afford that? — we're ingesting far less crap in the long run. I never thought of it that way before, but I thought his point of view was interesting.
