On decorating trees

When we left the Borg, I said I would not be celebrating Christmas, in the coming years, because it was too much trouble, and I didn't want to get started with something like that, at my age (I was 50 then).

But, this year, I am really getting into it. We aren't having a tree, and aren't putting lights up, but I am baking Christmas cookies, and collecting things for decorating cookies. I have bought presents for my grandchildren (we planned to do this anyway, this year) and some special ornaments for Princess' children, and for one of my son's family, and my youngest son, since this is his first Christmas, as a married man, they needed a lot of things for their tree. I bought them a dozen nutcracker ornaments, and 100 feet of lights.

I mailed 50 Christmas cards, and will send out a lot more. The names and addresses just keep coming.

Last year, I had Princess bring the children over (2 and 4) and we made Gingerbread Boys, and decorated them, for tree ornaments, and ate a few too. They loved it and are looking forward to doing it again, after they get their tree next weekend. The two year old ate her Gingerbread Boys, right off the tree, body part by body part. It was very funny. Last summer I bought a Gingerbread Lady, so we can make both this year. Now they are 3 and 5, so maybe the little one won't eat the ones on the tree this time.

One of my friends, who is still a dub, comes over all the time, to see what I've done for Christmas, next. She is giving me things, and bought a magazine for me with Christmas cookie decorating ideas, and gave me some coasters for the season. When she was here on Saturday, she said "I love Christmas." She will never tell on me.

    I love this thread!

Hmmm. What are my Christmas traditions? I don't really have any. I've been out for 11 years and have celebrated holidays with abandon every year. But every year it's done with new friends and new "family". Haha!

Not long after I left the dubs, I joined my father's non-JW family for holiday events. Hated it. None of them looked at it other than the spiteful, selfish, gift-getting holiday it had always been on the McElfresh side of the family. Made me realize why my father doesn't really like his family. They're mostly people with the JW selfishness and bitterness without being JWs.

So several years ago I realized I didn't like spending time with them and I stopped going. My grandmother still holds it against me and gets angry with me every year for not "coming home" like I should. Blech. Can barely stand talking to the woman.

I know one of these days, I'll have my own family filled with traditions and great memories for the kids. I'm in no rush. I'll get there one of these days.

The only tradition I really have is Thanksgiving traditions, but we're past that now.
