    What is the factual basis of your claim (besides Al Gore) that there exists a "consensus" among scientists?

    Is it safe to assume you are discounting the IPCC? Please let me know if you are disregarding the conclusions of the following bodies as well:

    FreeWilly you kindly pointed out my affection for the scientific method - a major part of this is peer review as you know. So lets assume all the bodies listed above don't represent the views of their members, what do the facts on consensus WRT climate change from peer-reviewed papers show? Well we don't need to guess. One Naomi Oreskes made the valiant effort of analyzing whether the so-called scientific consensus was mythical or fact based. She writes:

    The drafting of such reports and statements involves many opportunities for comment, criticism, and revision, and it is not likely that they would diverge greatly from the opinions of the societies' members. Nevertheless, they might downplay legitimate dissenting opinions. That hypothesis was tested by analyzing 928 abstracts, published in refereed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003, and listed in the ISI database with the keywords "climate change" (9).

    The 928 papers were divided into six categories: explicit endorsement of the consensus position, evaluation of impacts, mitigation proposals, methods, paleoclimate analysis, and rejection of the consensus position. Of all the papers, 75% fell into the first three categories, either explicitly or implicitly accepting the consensus view; 25% dealt with methods or paleoclimate, taking no position on current anthropogenic climate change. Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position.

    And she concludes:

    Admittedly, authors evaluating impacts, developing methods, or studying paleoclimatic change might believe that current climate change is natural. However, none of these papers argued that point.

    This analysis shows that scientists publishing in the peer-reviewed literature agree with IPCC, the National Academy of Sciences, and the public statements of their professional societies. Politicians, economists, journalists, and others may have the impression of confusion, disagreement, or discord among climate scientists, but that impression is incorrect.

    The scientific consensus might, of course, be wrong. If the history of science teaches anything, it is humility, and no one can be faulted for failing to act on what is not known. But our grandchildren will surely blame us if they find that we understood the reality of anthropogenic climate change and failed to do anything about it.

    Many details about climate interactions are not well understood, and there are ample grounds for continued research to provide a better basis for understanding climate dynamics. The question of what to do about climate change is also still open. But there is a scientific consensus on the reality of anthropogenic climate change. Climate scientists have repeatedly tried to make this clear. It is time for the rest of us to listen.

    I'm not sure how else to demonstrate consensus, so if its OK with you we'll agree to disagree on that. Without being disagreeable of course!

    How do you explain the fact that CO2 has never been a climate driver in all of Earth's History?

    What is the basis for thinking it will start driving climate? (you spout off about your knowledge of the "scientific method" so please incorporate this in you answer)

    How do you explain Ice ages at CO2 concentrations over 10x what they are now?

    Since CO2 has typically lagged global temperature rise, would you describe it as a cause or an effect?

    What makes you confident in the computer models on which ALL of the climate projections are based in the face of their spectacular failures to date?

    We seem to be going round in circles here. I have made no claim to understand all the science. The questions you ask are amply answered elsewhere and here - if I can just repost my thoughts from earlier in the thread :

    Indeed I don't have an opinion - I accept the global scientific consensus based on three concepts:

    1 - My belief in the veracity and accountability of the scientific method

    2 - Occams razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one

    3 - I don't have enought time to become enough of an expert on every subject - do I need a Professorship in neo-Assyrian archaeology to decide whether Babylon was destroyed in 587 or 607? Do I need a Doctorate in ancient Greek grammar to make my mind up on the correct translation on John 1:1? Same applies to climate change.

    Yep you guessed it - your graphs (source not cited) and the YouTube clip are both from the 1980's.

    The music is timeless unlike your graph. See there has been some new information in the last 30 years. And whilst I couldn't agree more with the close correlation shown by your graphs it seems that right about the time your data ends (inconveniently) more current data shows a divergence between the suns activity and earths temperature.

    Any ideas on what might be causing the earths temperature to diverge in an upwards direction?

    The conclusions reached by the Max Planck Institute have been supported by the following subsequent papers:

    • Solanki 2008 reconstructs 11,400 years of sunspot numbers using radiocarbon concentrations, finding "solar variability is unlikely to have been the dominant cause of the strong warming during the past three decades".
    • Ammann 2007 : "Although solar and volcanic effects appear to dominate most of the slow climate variations within the past thousand years, the impacts of greenhouse gases have dominated since the second half of the last century."
    • Lockwood 2007 concludes "the observed rapid rise in global mean temperatures seen after 1985 cannot be ascribed to solar variability, whichever of the mechanism is invoked and no matter how much the solar variation is amplified."
    • Foukal 2006 concludes "The variations measured from spacecraft since 1978 are too small to have contributed appreciably to accelerated global warming over the past 30 years."
    • Scafetta 2006 says "since 1975 global warming has occurred much faster than could be reasonably expected from the sun alone."
    • Usoskin 2005 conclude "during these last 30 years the solar total irradiance, solar UV irradiance and cosmic ray flux has not shown any significant secular trend, so that at least this most recent warming episode must have another source."
    • Haigh 2003 says "Observational data suggest that the Sun has influenced temperatures on decadal, centennial and millennial time-scales, but radiative forcing considerations and the results of energy-balance models and general circulation models suggest that the warming during the latter part of the 20th century cannot be ascribed entirely to solar effects."
    • Stott 2003 increased climate model sensitivity to solar forcing and still found "most warming over the last 50 yr is likely to have been caused by increases in greenhouse gases."
    • Solanki 2003 concludes "the Sun has contributed less than 30% of the global warming since 1970".
    • Lean 1999 concludes "it is unlikely that Sun–climate relationships can account for much of the warming since 1970".
    • Waple 1999 finds "little evidence to suggest that changes in irradiance are having a large impact on the current warming trend."
    • Frolich 1998 concludes "solar radiative output trends contributed little of the 0.2°C increase in the global mean surface temperature in the past decade"

    So there we have it. Peer reviewed consensus on solar activity. Simplicity that Occam would have been proud of.

    I asked you of your factual basis for a consensus among scientists. You answered with a list or organizations endorsing the IPCC and further a paper indicating common agreement among IPCC contributors. I understand your unwavering faith in the IPCC, but of course that was not the question. The question is, does the exist a consensus among scientists? Is it because you've come to realize that there is indeed much disagreement within the scientific community over climate related issues and AGW that you chose to instead answer a phantom question about agreement within the IPCC?

    WHOOOOA there. You now agree with me? That puts you at odds with the IPCC. I think you are confused again. Lets just expand this a little. Below is Solanki's full reconstruction of solar activity and temperature.

    I agree it is difficult to defend a sweeping statement, just as you failed to establish any viability to your "no downside, only upside" claim.

    But here's a sampling of your attempt:

    You cite a collection of papers that questions the source of warming from ~1975 to 2003 and then claim Victory! that you proved a consensus. DO you realize that the idea that the Sun has been largely responsible for warming pre-1975 RUNS CONTRARY TO THE IPCC CONCLUSIONS!!?? Yet that is precisely what many of these very papers note. Your own evidence refutes you!

    Fair enough, but I might also add that you don't understand the issues either (no insult intended). In the IPCC summary for policy makers, CO2 is assumed to be the climate driver since the beginning of the industrial revolution when atmospheric CO2 concentrations began to rise.

    Let's first establish some common facts.

    1) According to research by Solanki and others (whose papers I've read long before this discussion) the Sun's intensity rose to a level higher than seen in the past 11,000 years.

    2) As noted in the above graph around the 1980's this intensity plateaued at this historic high. (I mentioned this plateau in a previous post within this thread)

    3) Only recently has this intensity dropped off (post 2003) to a minima.

    With this in mind we you want to know why temperatures rose until 1998 while the Sun's energy remained plateaued at an all time high? You do realize that the Sun's intensity remained at an all time high during this period and by you citiations this is now the issue you appear to have embrace - correct? I don't want to put one minute of effort into a reply to that question unless you acknowledge these facts.

    But I will help you understand that there is by NO means a consensus among scientists when it comes to the causes of climate change and AGW. What a silly notion too. Science has never sought or appreciated a consensus in any field of study.

    The Little Ice Age and the subsequent warming were global in extent. Several Holocene fluctuations in snowline, comparable in magnitude to that of the post-Little Ice Age warming, occurred in the Swiss Alps. Borehole records both in polar ice and in wells from all continents suggest the existence of a Medieval Warm Period. Finally, two multidecade-duration droughts plagued the western United States during the latter part of the Medieval Warm Period.     Gill, some of the replies to the article you posted above are also very interesting and tend to debunk much of the author's evidence.

    But I agree that global warming/cooling is a very complicated issue and scientists themselves disagree about what to make of it.
