    Lady Lee:

the DONATION simplification - I still don't get how "donating" when you pick them up and then "donating" anything you get from the householders is a form of DONATION - maybe you can help me understand how this is makes a JW's life easier

My dad used to be an MS prior to the donation arrangement being implemented. I remember him spending hours at the hall before each audit was due, trying to get all the numbers totted up and balanced. Not easy at all especially when the pioneers could by for half-price whilst r&f pubs had to pay the WTS Recommended Retail Price. I know he was glad when that changed.

They have seriously shortened the assemblies/conventions. Used to be 7 days long and from 8am to 9pm or something crazy like that (though thankfully before my time!). I think I remember having to do a half-day on the Thursday of the district convention weekend. Anyone else remember this or am I cracking up?!

Both Mom and Dad can now count an extra 4 hours a month.

It feels like Enron accountants are tracking field service time.

Making things like voting and blood a MOC in print but quite the opposite in practice

I remember when they let "Brothers" with UBM's still achieve the position of Elder.......

You can now separate and divorce your mate on the grounds of 'spiritual endangerment' usually at the Elder's encouragement. (this provides a way for Elders to remove apostates)

If I remember right the international conventions were 4 day conventions. Otherwise it's the standard 3 day.

I used to bitch about bringing food with me everyday. I hadn't thought how much more annoying it is for those who stayed at hotels

Yes I do remember 8 day assemblies that had an evening session also. Then you went out in service one of the afternoons ( in a strange city). The circuit assemblies started Friday evening and often in a location that you had to get a hotel room. Pioneer hours were 100hrs for reg. pioneers and 150hrs for special pioneers.

I remember at least one 8-day assembly but there possibly was another one in there somewhere. And there were evening sessions

Regular DC started Thurs afternoon and went until late afternoon on Sunday

CA started Fri night and went to late Sunday afternoon

I have to wonder what the real reasons for this was. We know they had real problems booking stadiums due to the whole food issue. The WTS rarely really does things to "help" JWs. In almost everything there is a hidden motive. So:

    • booking stadiums for the longer periods of time might be more expensive
    • many stadiums were booked the evening before the WTS took over and had to clean the place - sometimes the show from the previous night was being taken down while the convention platforms were going up.

The shorter DCs and CA I think actually did help people but my suspicious nature when it come to the WTS looks for the hidden aganda

I think that kind of thing has alwasy been present. We've seen how all the way back to Russell t6here was one set of rules for the JWs and a different set preached to the public - and never the twain shall meet

That is one I didn't know about

    That is so sad.

Hmmm I wonder if legal issues were coming up regarding food allergies, special diets, etc and they were forced to give it up before they got sued by someone.

I used to work at the food stands at every convention.

The last year or 2, I saw something new: Some guy would come around to each food stand with a portable thermometer. He'd stick it into the pile of roast beef sandwiches, or hoagies, or whatever, look grim, write something on a piece of paper, and walk away. This was repeated every day.

I figure that at least part of the reason for dropping food service was fear of lawsuits due to illness caused by serving food that should have been kept cold, but was really at room temperature for hours on end.

I seem to remember having to clean an indoor arena right after one of those Monster Truck Shows or something... dirt, dirt, and more dirt in every conceivable crevice. The arena got a free cleaning that would never have been done otherwise.
  • I also seem to remember on more than one occasion having to completely dismantle everything between weekends because there were other events at the venue. Anyone have it where the venue management told WT Convention management that there was another event on Sunday evening and they had to be out in 2 hours? (over at 4, out by 6?)

Glad I dont waste my time with that anymore...
