Did you have experiences seeing people guilted because of their jobs interfering with meetings, or associating with worldly relatives, or pursuing trips, hobbies, and recreation??

Yep. My dad. When I was young, my older sister developed a brain tumour and my parents were able to get her into the top neurosurgeon in New York City. At that time, the Canadian health care system only paid about 80% of out-of-province coverage for something like this, so my dad was stuck paying about $13,000 in my sister's medical bills-----a substantial sum in the 1960s. Anyway, at the time, his job required shift work (he was in Transportation and worked for the government) and he was able to put in alot of overtime, which was necesary as he still had 5 other kids and his wife to provide for. Needless to say, he missed alot of meetings. One of the elders was foolish enough to say something to my dad about how he should look for another job----one that 'wouldn't interfere with meeting attendance'. My father basically told him to go to hell. Since my dad had absolutely no interest in ever becoming an MS or elder, there really wasn't anything they could do to him.

I also remember my father making plans to take us to Disney World in 1975. He was verbally repremanded for persuing something like a vacation "when you know what year this is!!" The funny this was, my father definitely believed that Armageddon was coming in 1975, as I remember several conversations with him about it. But, he wanted his kids to see Disney World before The End came, so off we went.

Mary, your dad sounds so cool. Good for him for living his life his way and not letting the elders interfere.

Unfortunalely, my hubby was not like your dad. He refused to work on meeting days and this held him back at work. He did not persue a higher education (we became dubs in our early 20's) and so he did not make enough money when our kids were young to support us without my working. I had to always work even though I had chronic fatigue syndrome.

We also had stress because my hubby refused to allow me to use birth contol pills as an elder told him that using them amounted to having an abortion! What an idiot! I was always stressed about this because I had post pardum depression with both my kids and the doctor severely warned me not to have any more children.

Anyway, we have been out 5 years now and my hubby is going back to school at 41. He now works any hours and got promoted at work and is making really good money. I still work, but this is my choice only. Also I am happily on birth control which keeps me feeling secure mentally but I also found that it helps my migraines I had for years and other menstrual problems.

Now my hubby feels like a fool and wonders how much farther along he would be in life if he made his own decisions.

As for me, I was always "rebellous". While I was a dub, I took a job as a nursing assistant at an assisted living facility owned by Quakers (a religious order) and an elder told me I was going against the Bible, I told him to show me where it says I can't work at a place like this when I am not involved in any type of religious activities of any kind? Anyway, he backed off. I find if you stand up for yourself, they always do back off. They have a percieved control over the congregation, which they even know is all smoke and mirrors.

    Peace, Lilly

They ban education so one cannot seek a decent paying job that lets them work 9 to 5. And then they bash people when they have to work more than one job, or they have to work hours that interfere with going to boasting sessions that aren't even worth the time to go to. Truth??

This is because there is really nothing to inspire people within the organization or anything to evoke natural intrinsic motivation based upon love and devotion.

    Well stated Jeremy.

" Rather than choose academic subjects that are geared toward a university education, parents and children need to consider courses that are useful in pursuing a theocratic career."

Its so easy for some to give you such ridiculous advise to cut back on work, make due live impoverished just

like the apostles did.....wake up we are in the 21rst century.

While these very ones dish out all these so called words of wisdom, they live in a world where they don't have

to work a 9-5 or so job let alone 2. Things are provided for many of them...how easy it is to tell others how to live their lives.

Thanks for all the great comments ! Sorry I couldn't reply the last couple days as I've been swamped with work ! So, now I'll reply.

ST. ANN- The elders always made us feel guilty about devoting time to our jobs. It is a crime the WT society makes people feel guilty about improving their lot in life like the lady you wrote about ! They make you feel guilty about just working to survive ! It's sick. I'm so sorry that the " segregationist " policies of the witnesses caused your parents to shun your grandparents. I'm glad you sought out a relationship with your grandparents while you had the chance to do it. I feel for you.

JEREMY C- I have been banging the same drum you have about the witnesses for the last year or so about the motivation they use is based on " guilt " and " fear " . It is the 2 legs that the Watchtower society walks on and controls the Jehovah's Witness members with. Really sad. They certainly are not united - just made to fall in line and be regimented, manufactured, and enforced upon.

OUTLAW- Thanks for the props guy ! I feel it is important to let young and old know these things - especially if they are just exiting the witness cult and discovering this stuff anew ! Remember what it was like for us when we first got out !

MUSTANG- God bless " Uncle Bob ". I'm sorry you didn't get to know him. He sounded like a great guy. Anybody that would stand up to a witness and throw him out of the house- is high on my list ! LOL! I too feel Jesus did not condone shunning family.

CAMEO- D- I agree with Mustang as well !

JUST HUMAN- I hear you brother. I went through the same pressure from the elders you did. I had one elder tell me I was being materialistic for picking up more jobs in my janitorial business . I had to provide at the time for 3 children and 2 step-children in 2002. They will make you feel guilty about just making a normal living and missing meetings ! I'm like you - I didn't tolerate it ! It's one reason among many that I left the witnesses 5 years ago.

CARLA- I hear you sis ! We do get the leftover time from our JW relatives. And some of us get no time at all from some of them. It's sad.

NO MORE KOOL AID- I'm sorry you were pressured about not working and being hassled about attending meetings. These jerk-off elders don't get it that it costs tons of money just to survive ! They tried to put guilt on me too when I was in - I just ignored them.

MARY- It sounds like you have had a really cool dad ! He sounds real and authentic , unlike most witnesses. I'm glad he stood up to the bastard elders and told them to take their counsel and stuff it where the sun don't shine ! He loved you and your siblings enough to show you real love as a father ! I bet you have great memories. That's really cool.

LOVELYLIL- I'm glad things finally worked out for you and your husband eventually work wise ! That elder telling you taking birth control pills is the same as abortion - gawd, what an idiot ! Where do they find these guys ? Gawd- I hated it when they gave out their personal opinion when counseling us ! 100 % of the time it was bad or wrong advice ! I too have found that if you stand up to them and stare them down - they do back off ! Good point by you !

WT WIZARD- Very true. They ban higher education and want their members to be poor materially so they can control them more !

LDH- Very true. The witnesses don't inspire any thing based on love or devotion.

QUIRKY 1 - You are to be commended Brother Quirky for burning your briefcase with it's contents ! Well done ! Hell, I'll give you everlasting life for just that one act ! LOL!

BLUES BROTHER- Very true. The WT society controls eveything witnesses see, hear, and do. My god - they'd control when you use the restroom if you let them . Oh- Wait. They already did that when we were counseled not to go pottie during the singing of the song ! Jesus.

HOPE 4 OTHERS- You are right. It's so easy for the old geezers on the GB to tell people to cut back on work - because they have everything handed to them on a silver platter ! It's ridiculous
