I've never had a problem with adherents of any particular religious group financially supporting their chosen "group". However, what gets to me about the Watchtower Society is the obvious hypocrisy:

The Society claims to be different from all other religious organizations and actively criticises the schemes of other groups to generate money. Yet, in its own devious ways, seeks to extract money from its adherents.

I'd have less difficulty with the Watchtower Society if it cut the PR crap, and just admitted it needs the money to survive. At least the passing of the plate in other religions has the virtue of being direct and honest about the quest for money.

I'm unclear on tithing, but wasn't that just for the Jewish temples? Jesus never asked for buildings to be constructed for worship that required the flock to support it financially. Jesus preached the temple would be spiritual, not material.

When I was a witness we paid for the literature when we picked it up. If we didn't place them we took the loss..

Also the money we made on literature was supposed to buy our next batch of literature..so gas etc came out of our pocket..

It's about time the WTBTS felt the crunch..let them figure it out.

They used to get free labor in printing before they decided to pay someone else to do it..why did they quit?

And I remember when the bibles were only $3.00 and $5.00...may have even been cheaper than that.

Maybe they have been watching too many of the Jim Baker shows...they are getting greedy..

Wait, what do you mean they are paying someone to print lit now? Is this true? You can't be serious, they are out-sourcing? But what about all those HUGE expensive computerized printing presses?

This is absurd on two levels.

The idea of a multi billion dollar corporation shaking down blue collar wage earners is topsy turvy, and is a joke. Or perhaps a jest.

Also, on a doctrinal level it makes no sense. Do they not claim to be the Faithful and Discrete Slave whom the Master has entrusted His belongings? We are talking about the Creator putting them in control of His assets and they want to nickle and dime those who they are entrusted to feed? somehow this give lie to their claims.

From the 11/96 Kingdom Ministry selection that Blondie posted:

A failure to contribute enough to cover costs will ultimately restrict what the organization may otherwise be able to accomplish in furthering the worldwide work.

Does The Watchtower put their trust in Jehovah? I don't think so. This statement shows they don't.

When it comes down to money, both people and organizations start to show what they really believe.

literature is on a donation basis!!!!!!

You aren't suppossed to put a price on donations. If that is what the people at the door are giving for the literature then that is what it is worth. Well actually IMHO it is worth even less than that.
