In the late 60's there was an announcement almost every week. They didn't like doing 2 on one night.

I guess some people don't know what morals were like in the late 1900's.

Tell me about it. I look at some my self rightous jw relatives who's secrets I only know too well by way of my mother. My great-grandmother( she became a jw in the 1940's) , who raised my mother as her own, had one daughter out of wedlock by her sister's husband and we will never know who she had my grandmother by (she took that info to her grave). I have an uncle married to my father's sister (they both became jws in the 1960's) who has several kids out of wedlock, concieved after he took the dip. I know of couple who ran around with my parents' crowd when they were teens who had to get married cuz the girl got pregnant, she was 13 and the guy was about 19 or 20 and they both were jws (oh and that happened in the late 50's).

Ain't nothing new under the sun.

oompa I always thought that entertainment was worse right after jesus than it is now. Whenever a "brother" would say something negative about football I always thought about those christians being devoured by lions for entertainment...noway football is even close to being as bad!

MEtatron, you said: "And how about civil rights? Do we still lynch black people at Southern picnics? Does apartheid still exist in South Africa? Can women become Senators and corporate heads?

Did we just elect a black guy president?

Ditto! Exactly what I thought. In the middle ages, they started new settlements so that people in a community wouldn't have to give charity to the inhabitants when they got old or were disabled! You know how everyone gets their panties in a bunch at the very idea of hanging a person (Palin or Obama or whoever) nowadays? Not two generations ago, I don't think real lynchings got that much press!

Life can be crappy, but we at least have the decency to BE shocked at atrocities these days! I do think there is an irony that dog abusers get more press than child abusers (Vick) and that abortion is more acceptable than capital punishment.

Life- It's not without issues and irony, whatever your time or location in history.

Ask her about the Temple prostitutes and Lot's daughters getting him drunk and having "relations" with him.

You know, I never understood that. My husband isn't even old (41) but if he's drinking he's not "up" to having relations. But Lot was? What did Lot's daughters have that I don't have? Hmmmm? StAnn

As Reniaa says, it's all relative to where you are. Since I left the KH and the JWs, my morals have been on an uphill climb. Now that I'm not living a life ruled by fear, I've had the time and opportunity to develop some real values and discover what is really important to me in my life. I'm a much better person today than I ever dreamed of being as a JW.

So it is relative to time and place. In 1981 as Dub faithfully attending the KH, I was much more immoral than I am now in 2008 as a Catholic faithfully attending Mass. I actually care about people now, as opposed to caring about whether or not they'll accept ME as their personal savior and take the literature I'm offering them, which is oh-so-important when your true interest is in getting credit (turning in time, etc.) for what you do than in doing the right thing for the right reason.

Ever since I can remember the WT has used this scripture to "prove" that we are living in the last days.

(2 Timothy 3:1-7) 3"But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away. 6 For from these arise those men who slyly work their way into households and lead as their captives weak women loaded down with sins, led by various desires, 7 always learning and yet never able to come to an accurate knowledge of truth. "

Ever since I can remember, I could never really accept it. Even when I believed the WT, I could see that the people of history could be violent, mean and nasty. Hardship and necessity turned men into thieves and robbers. Thankfully, more money today removes that pressure.I have posted before about the history of Victorian London, with its thieves, vagabonds and prostitutes. I have read of the public pleasure in attending a hanging - for entertainment.I believe that their view is based on a rosy view of Edwardian life before 1914, but was that true? Not from what I have read

.We should not compare society with the way that we would like the world to be, rather with what it has always been, to consider whether it is worse

What did Lot's daughters have that I don't have? Hmmmm?

We were so much closer to perfection back then.

    OR

They had to coax it quite a bit and it wasn't really good for them, just enough
    to get the "seed" out.

Good reply to your wife's comment oompa

The reality is everything that was stated in the bible as signs of the end times was apparent socially in biblical times and may have been somewhat worse to some degree

that also includes earthquakes, pestilence and lawlessness etc etc.

I don't think this has been brought up on this thread but when a witnesses says to me how much worse society is getting and how morals are non existant, I can't help but think that we just hear about the problems in the world more than we used to.

for example family violence. I think as a society the problem of family violence is an issue that has more coverage. We now have more help for victoms of violence. I think that decades ago problems in the home were just not talked about. I imagine abuse was just swept under the rug and people looked the other way. Now people are more empowered and getting help and getting out of bad relationships. The problems that have always been their are just talked about more.

Also the idea of wars, and earthquakes ect becoming more and more common. Isn't it really just a matter of now because of radio, tv, internet, our world is just more connected and we hear about disasters happening all over the world.
