Cops have the lives and civil rights of people in their hands. The problem is that most of these cops are nothing more hot-headed adrenalin junkies who constantly need to do more and more dangerous things to get their adrenalin fix.

I got challenge this... most are hot-headed adrenalin junkies? Who need to do more dangerous things to keep the rush up...

One suggestion for you... if your local agency does "ride alongs" fill out the papers and spend a Saturday night in a patrol car. These guys dont seek this stuff out.

In my job I am a Senior Developer responsible for programs that handle tens of thousands of people's tax returns in countries all over the world. Most of these people are high-paid executives. If I screw up it could result in hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

When was the last time you had to use non-leathal force to subue an armed person who really wanted to kick your butt. Sorry... you can fix a software problem (most of us expect a software program problem, lol) but you cannot recall a blow or bullet. Your actions are not second guessed on the 11 pm news either.

In my opinion, they are nothing more than violent crack heads with legal immunity. This needs to change.

If officers had legal immunity why are these jamokes paying a lawyer? Your job wont get you sued if you mess up...

So..how would you change law enforcment? Remember you have a budget that pays for training, evaluations , fuel and cars etc... and you cant raise your town or counties taxes.

Are you aware that cops have a much lower mortality rate than other professions such as construction workers, loggers, ranchers, and just about any other physical job that requires labor? Statistically speaking, being a cop is a safe job, but to hear the melodrama so many people spew you'd never know it.

John...I guess I am one of those hot headed adrenaline junkies... I did reserve work years ago but opted out for a really crazy job as an electric lineman. So, the cow and horse thing is just too much... maybe I should hang glide too?

Did ya know an electric lineman has fidicuary responsibility if his actions cause injury or damage... I can be jailed if my guys get hurt or we cause damage to the public per OSHA regulations?

I guess the real melodrama is figuring out how to use that deadly force the town trusts your judgement with.

Does the town really trust.....did the town really have anything to do with the hiring?

Most of our officers are hired under one of two criteria........

    1. Young, just graduated and cheap.....

    2. You know somebody.....

I can tell you now that the amount of complaints hasn't changed the hiring practices of our local police chief. We have 21 year olds rolling in and out all the time. Half of the older officer's wives are seen with bruising......

Again I respect good level headed officers.... many of which I am related to on my Daddy's side.

Yknot--- yep, the town deserves better... but how much does town pay for the ancillaries?

police officers with domestic issues? lots of people in high stress occupations have domestic issues... does town pay for stress managment and other programs?

My opinion- towns councils and county commisions would rather pay for a SWAT team than train beat cops in all the social aspects of police work. They can see the tangibles of having a big armed shaved headed kid working for entry level pay... after all that military training they "already" have is a transferable skill set ...isnt it?

Town councils and county commisions would rather pay low wages and keep the ratio of sargents lower per shift. Supervision costs money.

bottom line.. most towns and counties complain about services and dont vote to fund them...taxes cost money.

You get what you pay for... from the recruiting process to in-service training...

forgot to add... yea, the "town" gets to vote dont they? If the town pays taxes for policing and they are not happy with the results.. change the bastards out at election time.

We get all tore up voting school boards and milage... but most folks just dont worry about policing unless someting goes wrong with the local officers.

The last 2 places I lived... both voted out a county sherriff because of poor managment (officers and training) issues.

Much like the Wall Street Flunkies ruining this Country...... it is the higher ups in the County who get PAID $$$$$$ and BONUSES.

Starting pay 9-12 dollars per hour...... (yea I know it is pathetic...but we are a small town under 5000 and not much crime)

LOL about the military training.... I live near an Army base and everyone jokes about how scared we are of those young-uns who clearly weren't smart enough to keep them from the assignment of guard duty but yet they have automatic weapons.... and salute at civilians

Edit to add... Our County Sherrif is related to 60% of the county DIRECTLY and another 25% by marriage.... he will DIE in office!

I'd probably rather live in your little old county with the $10 cops than most bigger cities...

We run our road patrol and jail on less than $1 million a year here in OK. But then we have more cows than people and most folks live near the 'hard road'.

biggest latest local crime... some one killed a cow for her head and horns...left the carcass in the pasture. The state is in on this crime too...dept of agriculture.

I like this better than West Palm Beach.

Disclaimer: Of course, I am not privy to all the details (real or imagined) of this story.

From what I read, what concerns me less is the fact that the police (apparently) made a foolish mistake; what concerns me more is that they (apparently) conspired to file false police reports to conceal a felon(-y/-ies) -- the one(s) they committed.

    yknot,

:knot sniffs her West Harris County nose....

Since you are from Harris County you certainly know what Galveston is like. It is its own world and outsiders are shut out. I've spent quite a bit of time in Houston and some time in Galveston.

Galveston gives me the creeps. This story doesn't surprise me at all.
