As a single jw, I helped several people with money and food, provided transportation. Growing up there were some jws that helped us out financially to go to the conventions, provided transportation to the meetings, grocery shopping, and working on my car when I was a young adult.

Most jws who do that don't publicize it and the recipients tend not to advertise either (out of embarrassment, hard to say).

Yes, I have seen many individual jws help other jws out financially, etc, but because they were that kind of person, not because they thought it was part of jw policy.

Good heavens, Mary, that Watchtower article is literally unbelievable. I keep thinking I can't be surprised by them anymore, and then they spew something else astounding!

Watchtower: "We avoid excessive concern over our health for another reason. Being inordinately concerned about our health could lead to our becoming self-centered."

Good lord, this sounds like a spoof. The Onion's version of a Watchtower, perhaps? Ooh, now there's a scary thought.

    Heh.

I have known many jws who were giving people in the many years I was in the org. I have also known many who were not jws. I think there are two types of people, the givers and the takers. There are just more takers than there are givers. The org is controlled by very selfish people in my opionion. I always considered the rulers of the org to be just like the scribes and pharisees. They were aptly described by jesus as haters of good.

The society is nothing but an organization. And an organization is only as good as its leaders. These leaders have hearts of stone. They actually discourage charity. Love thy neighbor means nothing to them. And they pull no punches about how they feel about their enemies. They have the insane notion that they can sastisfy peoples needs with the watchtower. Jesus fed entire crowds without asking whether they believed or not. It is obvious that he would not approve of the wts.

Oompah, I think you are right,my old Congo WAS very 1850,there were a lot of old school JDubs with family going back to Russells time.

But I still say that they did a lot of good deeds, and the example lived on,even when I left in early 08 they still had arrangements going that really did care for the elderly in many ways, transport for shopping and pleasure trips, help with gardening etc.

I think we were looked on as highly unusual and liberal by others in the circuit.but these christian acts WERE done, and still are I believe.

Don't make it da Troof though. The GB didn't have any influence in this,it was the love of the Bros. and especially the Sisters concerned.

They will get their reward(.in heaven?)

I have seen the brothers get together and put a roof on for someone. We always passed clothes around and gave away furniture and things like that. Took people to the assembly and bought a lot of groceries. Toward the end I didn't feel as generous toward a few that fell on hard times due to lack of health insurance because they were the very ones that counseled me about working outside the home (so that we would have health insurance).

So I have health insurance now so I suppose now I'm self centered.

It's easy for a idiot in an ivory tower whose every expense is paid for to look down their noses and judge others for having enough commen sense to care for themselves and their family. The sad thing is I remember back in the early 90's I got health insurance for my ex and I and there were actually a few grumblings from others in the hall. And don't get me started on life insurance.

Regarding helping others I do remember one instance where the PO basically called on those who were well to do because a publisher in the hall had a heart attack and some of the home expenses were unpaid. That one time request was never followed up on.

In another congregation there was a brother who was dirt poor. He was a servant and I felt bad because he had these really ugly suits from the 70's. Some of us invited him for meals but there was not a single instance from the body to help him further. In fact, I remember a sister in that congregation who at the time was pioneering, getting counseled for accepting meals to often. She was told that because she accepted them before, she was obligating others to do that for her as well. The brother counseling her is rather well off, she's dirt poor. He had "tested her one day in service" to confirm it.

I just can't stand how this religion has made giving to others or caring for one's self a sin.

My church made sure that I did not get behind on my household bills when I recently had major surgery and was hospitalized for over a week without a single dime of health insurance because of my health problems.

They also helped me get my hospital bill paid through a (GASP! ) Catholic organization that works with the (GASP! ) formerly Catholic-owned (St. Mary's) hospital I was in.

I would have been in deep financial trouble if I was still a JW.

I have never heard them specifically pray for a member of the congregation during an opening or closing prayer.

So much for love among themselves.

I went through a very rough time because I had an accident which rendered me incapable of working for several months. I never asked anyone for help, but that didn't prevent the elders from counseling me. They said I must be doing something to "grieve Jehovah's spirit", otherwise I wouldn't be having those problems.

I never saw it, never did it, except for when jws moved in. I would sometimes let them stay in a house that i rented. As well, when i moved to another area, a place to stay was arranged for me for a month, or so. I did see missionary types and pios given preferential treatment for employment, at times.
