Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years--Gen. 6:3

I was cleaning off a book shelf and saw a copy of Examining the Scriptures Daily for 2005. Was about to throw it away, but opened it, and this is what popped up for 6-11.... I remember discussing this about 5 years ago on the forum after the WT article of 12/15/03, but it still amazes me. It's obvious that the Society was hinting that the end would have to come by 2034, 120 years from 1914..

"Only 120 years more and Jehovah would bring "the deluge of waters upon the earth to bring to ruin all flesh in which the force of life is active from under the heavens." (gen. 6:17) When Noah was informed, he wisely used the time to prepare for survival. "After being given divine warning of things not yet beheld," says the apostle Paul, "[Noah] showed godly fear and constructed an ark for the saving of his household." (Heb. 11:7) What about us? Some 90 years have passed since the last days of this system of things began in 1914. We are certainly in "the time of the end." (Dan. 12:4) How should we respond to warnings we have been given? "He that does the will of God remains forever," states the Bible. (1 John 2:17) Now is therefore the time to do Jehovah's will with a keen sense of urgency. w 12/15/03 pp 6,7.

The problem they have with any new date they come up with is, 1914 has been totally discredited so what do they hang their new date on?

I don't think they ever learn though, the many many false dates of the past prove this,so expect lots more wacky end-time stuff soon,to spur on the preaching work (Ponzi Scheme)

Governing Body 1.0 is pretty much dead. They had a nice, JW pub supported life. They didn't have to worry about 1914. They survived 1975 and Ray Franz. "This will be Governing Body 2.0's problem." 1.0 said.

Governing Body 2.0 (Losch, Splane, Herd,Pierce, Lett, Jackson, Morris) needed to buy some time. Thus, the reference to 120 years ending in 2034.

What will happen in 2034? What do these guys care? That will be Governing Body 3.0's problem. (you to can be a part of Governing Body 3.0. Kiss @$$ for about 20 years, claim you are annointed, but don't make a big deal about it for a few years. [wait till after you are an elder before making this known] Pioneer the entire time. Wait for the existing members to get too old and tired to "govern" and wait for appointment. It worked great for 2.0)

Good point Jeff I've always thought that the GB were just setting out information that was just self sustaining to their position in the organization,

very similar to how marketing executives of a large corporation act, their responsibility is to keep the wheels in motion and to keep the gas in the tank.

Fortunately through the advent of modern information people can now see it was all just a devised fraud.

I wonder what they are going to do if "times" actually meant more than two times. If so, that is going to throw their whole computation off by centuries.

Speculation about a 2034 date has been raised before, but I cannot see any indication that the Society ever implied it . They said that Noah had 120 years and had to use his time wisely . They use that to say that dubs have to use time wisely today. There is no indication that the time span is the same.

I guess they would rather that the faithful are on tenterhooks expecting it every time bad news appears on the TV, rather than putting it off for another 25 years

I think the intent here is to imply that '120 years from 1914' (i.e. 2034, or by 2034) is exactly what the Governing Body had in mind.

Because of the 1975 fiasco and the change of the meaning of a "generation" in 1994, we know that confidence in the JW date of 1914 has been severely weakened. It needed to be seen in another context, esp to give the Governing Body time to maneuver around failed prophecies, while giving an air that they were still on the ball.

They had learned their lesson from 1975 (probably) and will likely never give a hard date again. This was a little sneakier though. There is no reason to give the period of the building of the ark at 120 years, then in the next sentence say that we are 90 years into what Jesus described as "days as the days of Noah were". The implication is very clear. I can clearly recall that this was commented on at this WT in our congregation, and was to topic of many a conversation within the circuit. Our CO even mentioned it.

It is my viewpoint that everytime a date, period of time, or year is mentioned, esp in the same paragraph, there is always an ulterior motive regarding prophecy and dogma the GB wishes to promote. This "linkage" was anything but accidental.

I agree. I wonder if the WT was trying to test the waters, to see what the reaction would be from the publishers. They have to keep the carrot out there somehow, and many us remember how we used to love date setting.
