I agree with primitivegenius...we can't ignore the fact that women outnumber men. Statistics generally follow patterns...population percentages will often mirror distribution percentages in sub-groups of that population. The Pew study showed that most religious denominations had more women than men, with the exception of Hindus, Atheists and Agnostics, where men were the majority. Considering Sweetpea's observations of the nurturing aspect of women's make-up and willingness to see the good, it is not difficult to understand the 60-40 ratio of women to men in the WTBS (which closely mirrors that of other denominations) versus the approximately 52-48 ratio of women to men worldwide.
The men that are attracted to the JW's as converts are often persons that are less than successful in their secular activities. They can live out their desires to be successful as a JW (becoming a MS, Elder or more) and establish a position of dominance. Since men tend towards that behavior, an organization with more women (especially those conditioned to be in subjection) can be a very attractive scenario. I realize that there are exceptions to this, but I believe that it is a common thread for male converts.
Just my two cents....
there are more women on earth than men
I don't have statistics for the world handy, but in the US it is almost 50/50. It's something like 50.5% female and 49.5% male.
My thought on why more females are religious... it seems that men are more likely to be analytical. Religion doesn't stand well up to critical analysis. Women are more likely to believe based on emtions and feelings.
They pray on the mother/child bond - a LOT.
An emotionally distraught mother or vulnerable mother often caves in after they ask her 'wouldn't you like your children to live with you forever?'..the inferred opposite of that is 'do you want your kids to die and be all alone without you?'..
At the core of a mom is the guts to protect her young and keep them close. Pick at a woman at the right moment when she's feeling just a little bit 'off' and that core is easy pickins. That's how they got my JW relative - and once in the rest is history! sammieswife.
Actually, you will find more women than men drawn to religion in general. The percentage tends to be higher in the WTS. Part of that for the WTS could be that they call on women more often at the door; I even had men send their wives to the door because the men said they handled the religious issues in the home.
Holy crap did I just see a post by primitive genius?
Of course we know there are not many women in heaven, after all it tells us in Revelation 8:1 that...When the lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. ;)
I think its just a cultural phenomenon that woman over the centuries have always been in moral subjection to the more powerful male figure and being that God
is suppose to be a male figure in the popular mindset of the population as also his son and so forth.
And it may also be that woman have over time have seeked security and guidance derived from that powerful figure out of a sense of emotional obligation.
What Ballistic said: I don't care who you are, that right there was funny.
Women tend to be more emotional than men I think. Plus, I find that many women who are either widowed or divorced seemed to be drawn to it. My feeling is that if and when a husband leaves, Jehovah takes the place of the husband. One girl I knew in Scarborough years ago was like that. Left 'da troof' when she was 16, partied, always had a boyfriend, got married, someone called on her and she thought she should go back. Like many 'newly converted ones' she wasn't balanced at all....she became fanatical and her husband eventually left her over it. Then she REALLY became fanatical. Everything was "Jehovah this" and "Jehovah that".....Even though I was a Witness at the time, it was really nauseating.
