I hope T Boone Pickens can get something done with his ideas. That we wait so long that we look back and say he was a man before his time.

T Boone's idea's have merit (though he's fairly bald-faced in his self-interest. that's ok, a good idea is a good idea), but c'mon, he's far from being the leader on the issues.

I don't think it is possible to "ruin" the earth as it does not have a "perfect" state. The earth is constantly changing.

Excellent comment Elsewhere. We are not ruining the earth, we are changing it. The earth will eventually be ruined by the sun, when it exhausts the majority of its matter.

Many of the things that we worry about are not as bad as we expect; a good example is Chernobyl. The area around Chernobyl was turned into a nature reserve which is now a haven for animal life. Because it was locked off from humans it teams with animals. To scientists surprise, it is filled with flora and fauna that, though highly radioactive, have adapted to be resisitent and thrive.

If you think using all available technology to fell the earths old forests, denude the oceans of their fish, pollute the air we breath and water we drink with toxins and wipe out bio-diversity and animal habitat then yep, we're f*cking this planet up and 'ruining' it like there was no tomorrow.

The manager of the Eden woodchip mill (shitheads pulping and exporting to Japan the old growth forests of south east Australia) once said "The only wilderness is between a greenies ears!" I hope that's not a prophesy that comes true.

I detest the way we're gradually concreting the planet and when you go on google-earth night the globe is lit up like a christmas tree .. first thing a parental alien might scream is "HEY DOWN THERE - PUT THOSE LIGHTS OUT!"

unc who reckons we should give the planet back to the monkeys.

I think we are changing the earth from the way we want it to be. I like the idea of working with nature and don't like the idea of too much concrete.

We know that other countries have reduced or have no ties to dependency on the oil from Saudi Arabia. The US could do it, too. Maybe in as little as three years.

If it is any comfort...we are already starting to do this in a large way. I work in the telecom industry and one of the hottest growth markets is in wind generation for power. I met with a customer yesterday who is in the middle of a huge wind generation project in Las Vegas, California, and locations in the Mid West that are building wind farms as we speak.

My customer mentioned that just one windmill (one blade of one of the propellers on these things requires a railroad car on it's own for transport) supplies enough electricity to power 10, 000 homes. Some of these are up and running now. Florida Power & Light has been supplying wind power for a few years now and is continuing, as is PG&E. Progress Energy in NC is looking into it now. If you listen to certain political rantings you might think that this is impossible and that we must drill in ANWR, but I don't believe this is true. We are heading in the right direction...let's just hope the "winds" of change continue.

Hey Unc, I saw a movie called "The 11th Hour" about global climate change that mentioned how the earth is all lite up at night. They showed a picture of it. It was very scary to see the changes that are accurring and we will have little effect on it even now. We lost eight years getting started on this lets see if we can make a difference now. Thanks for everyone's comments I just found an old thread that just went through a whole discussion on global climate change its effects. Don't mean to beat a dead horse. By the way I would never do that!

Well you can do a simple test and ask, how many Americans are ready to give up on their 4x4? In order to save the planet people need to start looking from inside how much of an impact they are making. Funny thing is, everyone thinks "well what can I do as a person, I don't make that much of an impact, do I?"

The only problem with that is 90% of other people think the same.

And if a planetary authority were set up to rein in greediness, it would soon become oppressive. That's why I keep hoping that Jehovah will step in, but how and when, if ever ?

Wouldn't you think Jehovah would be very oppressive...especially if he allowed the likes of Watchtower bullies to run the show?

Thank you for the correct spelling of T. Boone Pickens. I am a really bad speller so I appreciate it. I want to go look at the venus project info now.
