Cos I need some help as I don't trust my IT guy at all.

My email totally crashed on me today - I noticed the pee cee getting slower and slower and then it switched itself and restarted. I rebooted after that again...just in case. When I went into my mail everything that was in my Inbox and subsequent folders opened under that had disappeared along with everything in my sent items. The IT guy maintains it's because I've got too much mail. I did a HUGE clean out of all my mail about 6 months ago and only keep 6 months on hand - and nothing personal bar for a very special persons' correspondence - otherwise it's all work related. I delete stuff out of the trash a few times a day ( he acutally asked do you delete and then delete again - duh!!)

So question is 1. How can I read a .dbx file?

2. Does ram affect the speed of the computer?

3. I only have a 40 GB hardrive and have used 26 - would that affect the speed of it.

I defrag often enough, what else do I have to do to make this pee cee run better - or what should I ask him to do so that it runs quicker. And how does one avoid this kind of thing happening.

It's really hectic losing your work stuff and no one is phased (as it doesn't effect them and thus couldn't be bothered) I'm sick to my stomach. I had propals, special offers, features, news letters and all of it gone.

So question is 1. How can I read a .dbx file? That is a database file used for Outlook Express.

2. Does ram affect the speed of the computer? Absolutely. The more - the merrier.

3. I only have a 40 GB hardrive and have used 26 - would that affect the speed of it. Depends. What doesn't fit into ram will use a page swap to your harddrive. 40 gb isn't much, so with all the crap that Windows stores (temp files, etc.) - you must be constantly cleaning your harddrive. I'd ask for a upgrade. Heck, 100 GB harddrives are cheap these days.

Too much mail causing you to lose mail? That's pretty much bullshit. I would say that your email data file probably got corrupted somehow though, not due to its size but from other computer issues.

1) Not really sure, because I don't ever work with Outlook Express. But a google search of "dbx file viewer" turned up some hits.

2) Absolutely. If you don't have enough RAM, your computer will crawl. However, it's possible you have enough RAM and your slowness is caused by something else.

3) Nope. Deleting data on your hard drive will not speed up your computer. (Technically drives are a tad slower near the end of the disk compared to the beginning, but this is relatively minor and usually unnoticeable.)

Did I say how ridiculous using Outlook Express is in a business environment? They should be using a server-based email system where email is stored on a central server, regularly backed up. That IT guy should be fired. But maybe they don't give him any budget to do things correctly...

Actually I take that back; if your data file was reaching the maximum size for DBX files (probably 2GB) that can cause it to become corrupt.

NO i'm not using the "cup holder" I'm not THAT stupid. jesus. There are a number of dbx files ranging from 458kb to much bigger.

My company is penny wise - pound foolish.

Yeah I'm stuck using Outlook Express because we have a stupid IT guy that cons everyone with such a long drawn out story that they forget what they asked him in the beginning & when I question anything I'm usually told to stay the f*ck out of it because HE is the IT guy (he's a dutchman & they have ego problems) I don't even think this guy is qualified but nothing gets done about it - I don't know how they keep him on - he really sux at this IT thing.

Anyway - let's see what monday holds.
