@ oompah - I emailed that pic to my dad and asked him to show me in the Bible where Jesus ever used the divine name in prayer. His reply contained quotes of Jesus reading from the scroll in the temple and using the name Jehovah (in the NWT, of course). He completely side-stepped the lie the WTS has stated in the above picture.

password...tell your dad jesus would never had said aloud the name when reading the hebrew scriptures in public....he would have been flogged and sent out of the city and maybe stoned....have him check with some Rabbi's or jewish historians and he will find that the divine was considered way to sacred to ever say aloud....except once a year in the most holy by the high priest....even WT supports that the name was not actually said, but instead Adonai.....note appendix 1-b from the reference bible:

In 134 places the Jewish Sopherim (scribes) altered the original Hebrew text from YHWH to ’Adho·nai´. Gins. Mas , Vol. IV, p. 28, § 115, says: "We have seen that in many of these one hundred and thirty-four instances in which the present received text reads Adonai in accordance with this Massorah, some of the best MSS. and early editions read the Tetragrammaton, and the question arises how did this variation obtain? The explanation is not far to seek. From time immemorial the Jewish canons decreed that the incommunicable name is to be pronounced Adonai as if it were written ???? [’Adho·nai´] instead of ???? [YHWH]. Nothing was, therefore, more natural for the copyists than to substitute the expression which exhibited the pronunciation for the Tetragrammaton which they were forbiden to pronounce."
well HELLO WT!!!!....if "from time immemoial....they were forbiden to pronounce" the divine name....then why the hey do they say jesus and the apostle would say it???..........ask your dad............oompa

He no longer talks to me about this sort of thing anymore, I'm afraid.

pp - he no longer talks to you about religion because his non-cult self knows you are right - he has just hasn't admitted that to himself yet
can you imagine the dissonance in his head from being shown a barefaced lie in a WT?
oh and he has sub-contracted his conscience to Brooklyn - if they said it was fine to talk with you about these matters he would do so.

My dad has six children. All of his kids have been grown and gone for 20+ years, so there isn't anyone in his household who calls him "Dad" anymore. I was at the store a few years ago and kept calling, "Dad, Dad!" trying to get his attention. Didn't work. Finally, I just called out his first name and he responded. I pretty much always call him by his first name now. He says that he doesn't like it but I told him, if you won't respond to "Dad", what am I supposed to say to get your attention?
Might be seen as disrespectful but I don't see an option.
Re: the point about Jesus not calling the Father "Jehovah" is a good one and I'm going to send that on to a JW friend. We'll see what she says.

WT: "How can you really know God without knowing his name?"
-yahu as shortened forms of YHWH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahweh)
It's no wonder they tried to keep the name secret and did not want it pronounced!
WT: "It is important not only to know but also to use that name."
Do you Yahoo?

@ besty - he tells people that I say that that Jehovah's Witnesses teach lies. Now, while that's sort of true, that's not the point I was making. The point I made to him was that the Watch Tower Society teaches lies. So, I'm now being, in a way, attacked (my thread-bare character is further derided in JW circles) because I've pointed out the WT teaches bald lies.

I've often thought that the casual, offhand use of "Jehovah this" and "Jehovah that" actually cheapens the name, devalues it as common, borders on disrespect and detracts from the majesty owed to the Supreme Personage. It also smacks of incantantion.
