I'm studying for my master's and looking for government jobs. Slim pickings for sure with many if not all of the states freezing state empoyment. I'm nervous about finding a job after graduation. I really don't want to remain on the "system" any longer than I have to.

I work in a government job as a detention officer for a certain unnamed state.
The most recent new higher to be a detention officer has 2 masters degrees.
2 masters degrees to work 16 hour days.
and be thankful he has a job.

Some prestigious Art Museums have closed...permanently. They have given all of their art collection to other institutions.
Luxuries are the first to go.

We've stopped spending and buy only what we need, no luxuries for us.

I have been pushing up getting rid of crap that is near or at the end of its life, and getting good things. Better to spend the money and get good things now, before inflation eats up the value of the dollar and that $60 item at L.L.Beans becomes a $60,000 item (and there is no more money to make up for the higher costs).

well it looks like my biz will survive another year, but i have had to reduce a contract by 40k a year to keep it.....vultures are everywhere and so desperate and their prices are nearly impossible to match......so i and others will likely take a paycut and be happy to have a job.........i really do not understand how this seems to be so widespread.....in so many other countries.......but i do not hear doom and gloom in some places.....where is the economy still stable or growning?....oompa

Oompa,
It is somewhat stable where I'm at. We're oil rich, so things are still somewhat going, but there are still layoffs. Housing prices have only fallen 10 percent so far, but I fully expect that to change. Oil it tanking, gas is tanking, and we're being dragged down by the U.S.
What goes up must come down - what goes down must come up. It's happened for centuries.
People who probably don't feel it as much? Third-world nations. It's just another day for them, scrounging for food. We're so damned padded from everything that really happens in this world!

Is everyone sick of hearing me say I haven't found a job yet in Chattanooga, TN? The newspaper on Sunday last week had ONE page of jobs, none of which I was qualified for "I AM A CLERK!" My nephew (43) went to Burger King to get something to put food on the table and they wouldn't hire him since he had no fast food experience. Do you really think he wanted to work there? He does sound for bands and concerts. He has been really hit hard since the down turn in the economy. He may have to go on tour with a show or a cruise line. They are the worst.

I'll remember you in my prayers tonight Bubblie. Unemployment sucks. I am lucky my wife still has her job and got a promotion in January along with a big raise.
