My first encounter with Castellano felt like knives being thrown at me. Latin American variants are much softer.

oompa, if you check the catalogs or Internet sites of local colleges and universities, they often offer inexpensive courses in basic languages and other subjects for those who don't want to get a degree.
Around here, the departments that run these courses are called Continuing Education. They specialize in courses for adults who want to learn something (anything from foreign languages to jewelry making) without enrolling in a degree program.

Immersion. If we were aWitnesses, I would have recommended going to a Spanish congo. You would have learned a great deal in a few months.
And Watson, Rosetta Stone is an excellent program.

Classroom, or one on one is the best way to start. Once you'rolling, yah, a spanish cong IS a really good way. They will be all encouraging, getting you to read and stuff. The above is how i learned french.

The students were each given a different course and at the end assessed by native speakers.
Linguaphone institute students did best.
