Has anyone here met or spoken to a Mexican JW?

What first or secondhand evidence has anyone seen or heard apart from Crisis of Conscience about the Mexican bribery affair?

I read this on Yahoo answers

''It had to do with keeping neutral in Mexico.

The Mexican law stipulated that 'churches' without consent could be used by the government for any use they deemed fit.

Example, If the military was in the area and needed a place to house the troops, they could move into any 'church' in the area.

If the Mexican government needed a place to set up a voting booth.

the Local chruch could be taken for that purpose.

So being listed as a 'cultural' organization, enabled us to remain nuetral
    .''

That appeared to come from a Mexican JW who had no problem with the situation. Was it actually as bad as reported.

I'm not an expert on this subject, but I'd think that if the Mexian government wanted to overtake a building for voting or military purposes, they could do so whether it's a religious or "cultural" building and without the owners consent. This explanation reads like a typical JW spin on the situation to make it sound like the Society was one step ahead of Satan's political agents yet once again.

    Ah yes, the Mexican/Malawi issue.

After reading COC, I started to work up the nerve to start asking my family members about this. I am of Mexican descent, though I was born here.

When I gave a copy of COC in spanish to my aunt, who still lives near Mexico, she said she wasn't surprised about the Mexican brothers bribing the officials. She knows quite a few who were doing that back then. She doesn't see that the Malawi brothers suffered for nothing because of the stupid Governing Body. She can be so thick-skulled... She also doesn't see how bribing is evil. I am trying to get through to her, but she keeps stating that the men on the GB are just "imperfect" and are not to blame. Pisses me off...

well, I'm mexican and I'm a woman so I don't have first hand experience about the military card and I was kind of young when the malawi issue was at it's prime. But as i grew up i noticed that it was a "don't ask do't tell policy" on how you got away with military service. Later on they printed the publications right there in mexico so they created a publishing co. called "grupo ultramar de cv" cv means "variable capital" which is term used for companies that make profit. And I always was bothered by the fact that other religions were willing to have a sign outside of their properties saying "federal property" but be free to worship freely and WT did not want to do it just because then all their properties will become goverment assets.Right after they become legally a religion they started with the KH construction using the same tactic used over here (give me the money, build it for free, put it on wt name, keep paying rent)

And yet, according to some reports, the Malawi issue was a form of 'tax'.

For me, the Mexico/Malawi disparity is that allowances were made for one group and not for the other. AND there were absolutely NO APOLOGIES made to the people who suffered greatly.

The suffering of the Malawi brothers was, in my opinion, exploited to get the western witnesses (especially their children) to behave.
