I never liked the film much., As I remember, it was all about a man who got himself into bad situations and had no idea why he was there or what was happening around him. As films do, fortune saved him and "alls well that ends well" - but I thought the whole point of the film was that he was

    A few beers short of a six-pack.

A few peas short of a casserole.

Missing a few buttons on his remote control. - and so on...

Fortune was not all that saved him. He did have considerable skills as well, despite his mental retardation. I took it that while he didn't understand what was going on around him, he did see some of the most important things.

I didn't like the movie. The main character reminded me too much of our congregation service committee.

I like Forrest's saying "stupid is as stupid does" which I think actually came from his mother.

Forrest Gump's "Stupid is as stupid does" is a variant of an old adage, "Handsome is as handsome does." This saying appears in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and in Herman Melville's "Billy Budd," and can be traced as far back as the 14th Century. "Handsome is as handsome does" basically means that true handsomeness has to do with a person's behavior, not just a handsome face. The saying is also phrased in the forms "Pretty is as pretty does" and "Beauty is as beauty does." Forrest's version of the saying means that stupidity is not just a surface thing derived from a person's appearance. Stupidity is a matter of deeds, not looks. Like the other versions, it comes down to this: judge people by what they do, not by how they appear.
    All the best,

1 a : slow of mind :obtuse b : given to unintelligent decisions or acts : acting in an unintelligent or careless manner : lacking intelligence or reason :brutish : dulled in feeling or sensation :torpid <still stupid from the sedative> 3 : marked by or resulting from unreasoned thinking or acting :senseless <a stupid decision> 4 a : lacking interest or point <a stupid event> b :vexatious , exasperating <the stupid car won't start> I know a word need not fit each and every word of a defintion... there is various shades of meaning in a given situation but what of the word brutish : resembling, befitting, or typical of a brute or beast <lived a short and brutish life as a slave> 2 a : strongly and grossly sensual <brutish gluttony> b : showing little intelligence or sensibility <a brutish lack of understanding Was forest unintelligent like a beast ? A blanket definition of the word stupid would say so . but was that not the point of the movie... though lacking some intelligence we still were able to see his heart, his intent.. We still can use what we have though limited to add to this world rather than take away. To this question I would add another, but was he foolish ? : lacking in sense, judgment, or discretion a :absurd , ridiculous b : marked by a loss of composure :nonplussed 3 :insignificant , trifling Was he maybe a intellectual midget.. but a moral giant ?

He was as dumb as a bag of hammers. But he had a good heart. That wins out over smarts every time.

However, I still believe "The Shawshank Redemption" should have won Best Picture.

Actually I thought the point was that despite his lack of intelligience that he made a difference in the world. Lt. Dan and Jenny were the immediate recipients of his charm and good nature. But the movie used Hollywood magic to show that someone not gifted in smarts, looks or muscle could impact the world.

Innocence and good will won out over the evil and the bad that was all around him.

The point was that good can triumph, even if it's handicapped in some way.

Forest Gump was slow, but if he was a real person, I think he would be one of the "goodest" and wisest men that ever lived. He loved God, He loved others truly, he was sincere, honest, diligent and earnest in all his efforts, he forgave others, he practiced selfless generosity and kindness, he was patient, he did not judge others because of the color of their skin. And so on. Whenever life gave him a roll of the dice, he came out ahead. Call it Karma, or Divine Justice, but when we give we recieve and Gump is a fantastic example. Gump was not bright, but he lived a worthy life, and one can not help but sense at the end of the movie that he had peace. For me, FG is a morality play, like the book of Job.

I always amazed me how much Forest Gump was able to do without a driver's license-
