A "grid of streets" on the seabed at one of the proposed locations of the lost city of Atlantis has been spotted on Google Ocean.

The underwater image can be found at the co-ordinates 31 15'15.53N 24 15'30.53W. The legend of Atlantis has excited the public imagination for centuries.

The network of criss-cross lines is 620 miles off the coast of north west Africa near the Canary Islands on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The perfect rectangle – which is around the size of Wales – was noticed on the search giant's underwater exploration tool by an aeronautical engineer who claims it looks like an "aerial map" of a city.

The underwater image can be found at the co-ordinates 31 15'15.53N 24 15'30.53W.

Last night Atlantis experts said that the unexplained grid is located at one of the possible sites of the legendary island, which was described by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. According to his account, the city sank beneath the ocean after its residents made a failed effort to conquer Athens around 9000 BC.

Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University told The Sun that the find was fascinating and warranted further inspection.

"The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato," the Atlantis expert said. "Even if it turns out to be geographical, it definitely deserves a closer look."

Bernie Bamford, 38, of Chester who spotted the "city", compared it to the plan of Milton Keynes, the Buckinghamshire town built on a grid design. "It must be man made," he said.

Google Ocean, an extension of Google Earth, allows web users to virtually explore the ocean with thousands of images of underwater landscapes.

Launched earlier this month, it lets users swim around underwater volcanoes, watch videos about exotic marine life, read about nearby shipwrecks, contribute photos and watch unseen footage of historic ocean expeditions.

The legend of Atlantis has excited the public imagination for centuries. In recent years "evidence" of the lost kingdom has been found off the coast of Cyprus and in southern Spain.

Plato described it as an island "larger than Libya and Asia put together" in front of the Pillars of Hercules - the Straits of Gibraltar. He said Atlantis was a land of fabulous wealth, advanced civilisation and natural beauty destroyed by earthquakes and floods 9,000 years earlier.

For Pete's sake, Atlantis is not in the ocean. He's sitting by his scanner, making pdfs.

Fire up Google Earth and have a quick hunt around yourself.

It is not the only symetrical grid that shows up. It only took me 10 minutes to find another one. Smaller but more symetrical.

I wouldn't get too excited about either of them.

The 'streets' are far too large to have been a city inhabited by us tiny humans.

Even as rural roads they are unnecessarily large for horses and carts.

    Have fun

This is not on a seamount that could have once been above sea level; this is on the ocean floor itself. For this to be above water in historical times, essentially all the oceans (connected as they are with each other) would have to be drained of their waters -- at least to a comparable depth.

Details for the ocean maps on Google Earth come from sonar measurements of the sea floor recorded by boats - and the area around the Canaries was mapped by boats travelling in a series of straight lines....

'It's true that many amazing discoveries have been made in Google Earth - a pristine forest in Mozambique that is home to previously unknown species, a fringing coral reef off the coast of Australia, and the remains of an ancient Roman villa, to name just a few,' said a spokesman for Google.

'In this case, however, what users are seeing is an artifact of the data collection process. Bathymetric (sea-floor) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea-floor. The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.'

Come on, you can't be serious. Everyone knows that the ancients left Earth thousands of years ago because of a great plague, took Atlantis with them, left the Milky Way and settled down on the planet Lantea in the Pegasus galaxy.

It's true, Atlantis was not inhabited by humans. At one time you could even order its shrimplike denizens through the mail.

Altantis' location has been hypothesised in so many oceans and seas it's a wonder where they know where to look, if it even was a real place. Suggestions have been:

    1. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, destroyed by the divergent tectonic plates
    2. The Black Sea, destroyed by the same flooding which inspired the myths of Gilgamesh and Noah.
    3. The Mediterranean Sea on one of the Islands of Greece, Italy or Turkey
    4. The Baltic Sea, built by Aryan "supermen" in Nazi mythology.
    5. Antarctica buried under miles of ice.
    6. Bermuda or the Bahamas (explaining the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon).
    7. The islands of Malaysia and Indonesia.
    8. A lost continent off India named Kumari Kandam.
    9. India itself, the sub-continent that smashed violently into Asia creating the Himalayas).
    10. The Yonaguni island formation in Japan.

However my favourite has to be the Alteran theory: that Atlantis was actually a city-ship built by a race of aliens who suffered a great plague so had to leave Earth. After re-seeding human life on Earth, they settled in the Pegasus Galaxy on a planet named Lantea where they encountered an energy sapping life-form. This led some of them to escape by ascending to a higher plane of existence, and some of them to travel back to Earth where they introduced civilisation to the humans they had created on their previous visit. Many of them lived among the humans for a long time before themselves ascending, passing on the myths and legends of Atlantis which eventually reached Plato.

p.s. Thanks Leolaia, I was thinking about the Witnesses a few hours ago, and I just rediscovered that the website hadn't all been shut down.

    LOL Jimmy,

I used to hatch 'Sea Monkeys' for some of my smaller tropical fish.

I haven't seen that ad for donkey's years.

    Thanks for the laugh!!!
