I thought Atlantis was supposed to have the shape of three concentric rings, not a rectangle.

This sounds most plausible to me, at least at the moment without further data. The only way I could see this being habitable at one time is for this area to have been a rather large and imposing plateau, or at least have some formidable land rising off the ocean floor around it creating almost a valley-like situation. Doubtful though.

It's amazing how a story like this catches the the imagination of people. When you look at the original atlantis material, it's very meagr, just a few lines in plato's writings. As well, he claims to have gotten the story second hand from egyptian priests.
